Sateen vs percale sheets -- which is softer and less irritating?

I have to ditch the flannel sheets I bought last year, they're destroying my skin, especially under my eyes, I look like a dried up old prune especially around my eyes. The flannel is just much too rough on my (very) sensitive skin.

I have to buy more sheets and am looking at options at Garnet Hill. They have some nice percale and sateen options, but I'm not sure which would be gentler on my skin.

I do have a sateen sheet set from the Company Store that is a little irritating but IDK if they're not good quality sheets (I question some of their quality -- have had to return a couple things...) or it's the sateen.

So now I'm not sure what to order...

I'm not sure which would be better for your skin, as we switched from flannel (which we used for decades) to linen about 8 years ago.

Your comment that it's your eye area that is most affected suggests to me that you should try silk pillowcases. They are very gentle on skin and hair (extra bonus).

I’ve always been happy with percale but have never bought sateen. I’ve heard people say once they wash sateen they didn’t notice much difference from percale.🤷‍♀️ I suppose it depends on the brand. The last set I bought was (percale) from Sam’s Club for our guest room. Very pleased with the quality.

I wonder if this link might be helpful.

From what I saw, it seems sateen is smoother for sensitive skin. Percale does soften over time but sateen is soft from the start.

I have a set of Charter Club sateen from Macy’s. They are perfectly fine, but I prefer the feel of the Peacock Alley percale sheets I have. The sateen sheets are going migrate to the guest rooms. I’m sticking with percale in my room.

💯 silk pillowcase! Mine are from Blissy. This week they were both in the dirty clothes so I made up the bed using a regular pillowcase. The difference was so noticeable. My hair had tangles in it. I never have tangles in my hair with the silk pillowcases.

I have both sateen and percale in sheets. Washed before using in hot water we don't notice a lot of difference sleeping with either. I do add an extra rinse to a load of wash when doing anything we use or wear next to skin....that covers a whole lots of loads of laundry.😊

I'm another complete convert to silk pillowcases. I'd been an almost daily shampoo/blow dry person all my adult life and I get an extra day from styling - occasionally a third - using the silk pillowcases. I'd been putting them in the dryer briefly with light things like lingerie (never bras) and learned quickly they will look and last much longer hanging to dry so I now do that. Over the last years I've bought a few for our bed so always have backups in the linen closet - and several as gifts hoping those I've given them to enjoy them as much as I do.

Husband loves these bamboo sheets. Pricey, but they've lasted longer than any other sheets we've tried over the years.

Hmmmm..... Now I wonder if I should just buy new pillowcases instead of whole new sheet sets. This way I wouldn't have to chuck the flannel. The crook of my arm and my ankles get a little irritated with the flannel, but my poor face gets the brunt of it. I'll check out the Blissy.

I much prefer 100% cotton percale - they have more body than sateen and wear longer, in my experience, and I like the less clingy feeling; in fact, I won't buy sateen sheets at all. However, percale and sateen are just two different weaving patterns, and the quality of the material will probably make more of a difference than the way they are woven in terms of being irritating.

I’ve never owned sateen sheets as the feel just skeeves me out. I am 100% in favor of percale and have had expensive ones and cheaper ones from Target for our lake house that were surprisingly nice and comfortable.

Your thought to just buy a set of pillowcases is a good idea to test them. I’m always happy to have an extra set anyway.

Mxk3, if you don't mind being on their mailing list, you'll be notified of frequent specials on pricing at Blissy. Particularly considering this heavy shopping time of year....
