Kitchen Design Opinions Needed

last year

I know this is entirely subjective but I’m feeling very indecisive and hoping seeing other opinions will solidify my own!

I’m debating between off-white/light greige perimeter cabinets with walnut hood and island cabinets OR do all walnut cabinets (see my crummy mock-up below).

It will probably be Taj Mahal quartzite counters and backsplash on either option (although I’m also tempted to look at bolder calacutta marble, just worried about the durability of marble in a kitchen.)

Thoughts?

Two-Toned: Greige and Walnut
All Walnut

Depends on what is on the other side of this kitchen - the fourth wall not included in this pic - more cabinets, open to a great room, what is in that space and how do these three walls relate to the fourth wall?

A walnut hood with white cabinets looks top heavy and out of place. I'd do all white with walnut island, but not all white with walnut hood.

Yes. purely subjective. I will share what my cabinet guy told me and also a trick to help make up your mind.

We have an antique dutch colonial in new england near the ocean. we were stuck between maple, which is plentyful in new England, or painted hale navy before it became wildly popular. We loved the navy, but cabinet guy told us panted cabinets will chip. Not right away, but inevitably. We went with the stained maple and it does suit the house. We have a painted hutch and yes, it does inevitably chip.

A trick to help decide…..flip a coin. When the coin tells you the right answer, you will be either relieved or disappointed. That feeling will let you know which choice is right.

How about mostly walnut with a white island?

To add on to @Kendrah's thought about a walnut hood looking top heavy, you could consider doing a walnut island and just some walnut trim on the hood. I think that would tie the two together nicely. (Hood example below)

Also this wasn't what you asked about (sorry) but I hope you think carefully about your cabinets to the counter on either side of the range. You do have some landing space on either side of the range, which is great. But a common place to prep is between sink and cooktop, and you've eliminated much of the counter space there. I'm not a designer and won't try to tell you what to do, just saying to think about how and where you prep and what will work best for you.

I vote for chicagoans' color mix suggestion, which is what I also came here to type. :-)

I think the space on either side of the range is fine, as long as your plan is to prep on the island?

I think it depends on the natural light in the space.

If there is ALOT of bright light, I would go with the all Walnut, if not, I'd choose white.

Think about what it looks like at night or on dreary days with low light.

Am I correct in saying the uppers in the first rendering are the light greige? If so, I'd go a shade or two darker and actually use the darker color for the base cabinets and the white color for the uppers. I do like the pops of walnut in there rather than doing all walnut.

    Thank you all!!

The room you can’t see — it is open to the great room, which is very light and airy. White and light natural wood. The whole house is done in white and light wood trim — the walnut would be different for sure. Part of me likes doing something different and part of me worries it would stick out too much from the rest of the house.

An open kitchen is part of another room. It isn't, in my mind, the place where you go for different, but rather a place where you strive for cohesion.

Can you post a pic of the other room? Also, do you intend on replacing your floors? If not, have you obtained a sample of the walnut and tried it out with your floors in your space to see what it looks like?

Since your floors are wood I would stick with the two tone. All wood floors and all wood cabinets could look heavy.

Instead of having an island in the middle that you will, need to run around, do a long peninsula where you have the beverage fridge. The flow will be som much better and two people in the kitchen at the same time will have a much easier time moving around each other.

I'm not sure about marble to the ceiling on the sink side and with two tiny shelves floating on that mass of stone.

The hood seems oversize and the bulk hides a lot of the marble. You can't set anything on the counter because of the cabinets. The island could be way bigger like double in width.

floors will be a big element . I would spend some time on the upper cabs..probably eliminate the ones to the counter and install some to the left of window. Your kitchen is medium sized..not large. You want those important wall cabinets at the same time dont reduce your counter spaces. You have to fix this part. Because of the great wood floors ..which go through to the other area .....I would install a painted island. Yes paint chips but you can touch up and the island is not at eye level so people just deal with it over time. I might install walnut on the perimeter if you can afford all of it......once you fix the wall cabs....with some glass doors and lighting mixed in I think it'll be great. then back to the island in that clean, crisp, light color of your choosing...get something going with pendant or two. good luck. i cant vote for what you show because I would do it differently but working w walnut theme will be pleasing for sure.

painted island shown below would be better w wood floors and the walnut elsewhere.....here is medium toned painted island.....in your room I was thinking a lighter shade...but anyway.

P.S. do you think turning island the other way might enhance and make it feel more spacious ? you have 14-15 feet across sink to fridge...you can have aisles and still stools w island overhang....Of course placing the fridge to the far right of stove will remove constraints you may have about rotation of island..then you can put a small coffee bar in there ,instead. Removal of " down to counter " cabinets would make me think hard about placing fridge up on that wall.

MY opinion is never a wood hood they collect grease no matter how good the venting is and are very hard to clean . As for the cabinets why greige at all with walnut . I like white and walnut but in a much more contemporay style cabinets . That layout is poor to satrt you never want to pass the range to go from fridge to sink and IMO that island is just all wrong . Forget what you are planning for anything until you get the layout redone

  • last year

The layout is fine, my niece has the same floorplan, just a bigger island is why I suggested it.

Just my opinion, but I would not mix cabinet colors. I think in a few years, that look could become quite dated. Since wood is slowly making a come back, I would suggest that you stick with the walnut. But of course, it’s your kitchen, and you need to do what you prefer. Good luck.

Is this a new build or a remodel or? Do you have a kitchen designer? Using stone as a backsplash needs to be completely coordinated with cabinet layout & wall support.

I agree with patricia that the layout is not good. Your island is a barrier and the DW is on the wrong side of the sink (in the prep zone). A prep sink on the island would improve things.

Also agree that cabs to the counter are not good in this kitchen. The kitchen is not big enough to support the loss of counter space, and with only a main sink on the perimeter the cabinet is in the prep space.

Not sure how your island could be any bigger in width unless tracefloyd meant depth. Regardless 5' is about as far as you'd want to go and even that is larger than would be useful. As far as turning your island...you COULD but you'd need to make sure you have clearance between seating & the fridge. Nothing is worse than trying to get in a fridge when people are sitting at the island and the aisle isn't big enough. It also would make the fridge to sink distance even harder as a prep sink wouldnt' solve the barrier island problem.

I also don't think anyone can predict the future. Virtually every design decision will be considered dated at some point with the possible exception of all white cabinets, which are a safe choice and maybe also a bit boring and a bit overdone. If you want to mix wood & painted, do it. However, the island & hood being the only wood seems a bit disjointed. Also agree that white would be better than greige.
