Recommendations for a Murphy Bed (wall bed)?

last year

I'd like to put one in my spare bedroom, but there don't seem to be any that are rated highly. Add to that, most of them don't seem to be made with real wood. Any recommendations? I'm in Southern California/Orange County if that makes a difference.

My kitchen cabinet maker mentioned that he makes murphy beds too. Perhaps you can check with a custom cabinet maker where you live to see if they can craft one for you.

I was also going to suggest custom.

I got mine used from FB marketplace. It's not real wood and weighs a ton. I had to hire movers to pick it up and deliver. Our contractor was here doing work on our siding and kindly attached it to the wall for us.

I see this ad all the time on FB. This guy is in Laguna Beach.

Have you looked at Murphy Beds of Los Angeles? They list Newport Beach as one of their operated areas, and so they do make it to Orange County.

Irvine Murphy Beds is in Laguna Hills and is open by appointment only.

I hate the Murphy bed in my parents house! They bought the "best" mattress and it still isn't comfortable.

It seems that if you have a custom Murphy bed made that it could be built around the mattress of your choice. It's not like the mattress itself needs to fold.

@chispa, Does the bed at your parent's house have a solid base under the mattress? What makes it uncomfortable? TIA for your help.

The murphy bed I have takes any standard sized queen mattress. I have a serta and it's very comfortable. My DH and I slept on it for almost a month when we were having work done on our house. Other than we are used to a king, we were very comfortable.

Some good friends of ours downsized almost 2 years ago and moved into a senior facility. One of their extra bedrooms serves as both an office and a spare bedroom. One of fhe desks converts to a Murphy bed and it's where her elderly farher sleeps when he visits for 6 weeks each year. They were showing it to us during a recent visit and it looked nice. I have no idea where they bought it but could find out if you're interested.

I've seen them advertised on our local TV stations through California Closets. Also Wayfair, and then on Instagram I've seen one called Loribeds. I have no idea about quality of Wayfair and Loribeds. I'm sure California Closets is good but pricey. I'd consider a Murphy bed since we want to get rid of our guest room and make it a workout space. We don't even have a guest once a year, so it seems like a waste of space. One of the previous cats used to sleep in there a lot, but the current two barely go in there.

My husband built two twin horizontal murphy beds for our grandkids. You can’t use foam mattresses on them because the beds are ”up” most of the time and the foam will slide.

    Also check on thicknesses.
