If it really is bigger animals swallow the expense and get a wire fruit cage. For birds a netting cage works but the nets needs to be taut to avoid trapping them.

Bird netting works, but like Floral said it needs to be taut -- the little buggers aren't as bird-brained as we think, if there's any laxity at ground level they'll figure out how to get in and strip you bare....ask me how I know....

I've been debating getting one of these big crop cages but haven't yet bit the bullet; you could probably make something similar if you're handy:

If it's an animal rather than birds I don't think they'll be stopped by Remay or mosquito netting.

The Reemay works quite well for me against chipmunks and squirrels. I tie it closed around the base of the plants (mostly blueberries) and haven't had a problem unless it's loose and the chipmunk was determined.

I was thinking of the raccoons mentioned. And the squirrels round here can chew into most things if there's food to be had. (We have the highly successful invasive American grey squirrels which have pretty much eradicated out native red species.)

It would help if I knew the thief I'm up against before I overbuild a solution., One challenge I have is that the bushes are on a slope. I guess I will try to use bamboo stakes to make a frame for bird netting for starters.?How early does it go on?

Some species eat the fruit buds. On the other hand some eat overwintering pests. So, in a perfect world I'd put it on just before bud break. In reality I notice the berries are disappearing and rush about getting the nets on far too late.

It depends how bad your deer pressure is. Deer will nibble at the whole bush, whereas birds are only going to go for the berries. I wouldn't worry about squirrels and the like nibbling at the bushes, so if you don't have a deer problem, put the netting out as the berries start to ripen; otherwise, they will need to be protected year-round. If you're protecting year-round, don't use tulle -- fruit set depends on pollination, so you'd need to use bird net or wire fencing.
