I'm looking for suggestions. I'm not sure what to even look for in a stone material and what colors would compliment the sort of brownish tinge to the existing granite on the island. I would love to go more white, but I'm afraid it would clash.

Is the top pic the island counter ? It looks like it could b quartzite have you had someone from a stone yard check it out. Really hard to shop for this issue from pics on a monitor. I would look for maybe a really plain stone for the perimter maybe ( I hate to say) corian in a color from the stone or leave what you have which IMO works but not the backspalsh. I would be more concerned with no base cabinets that are drawers and the dated style of those .

Yes, the top picture is the island. I'm really not sure what type of stone it is. There are kitchen cabinets with drawers on the other side of the kitchen. But yes, another step is to update the cabinets and get drawer pulls.

Sara, your island granite (or quartzite?) is lovely. Love the warm swirls in it. I also see some black accents. How about a matte Absolute Black Granite on the perimeters? That would calm things in my mind as it has no pattern. Would that go with your island cabinet color? They appear on my monitor to be a steel grey? And yes, I know that’s then 4 colors in the kitchen, but I don’t follow that rule too stringently.
Then reassess and think about a backsplash. Pretty space.

And add hardware to your cabinets. Maybe mix up a bit what shows in your glass fronted cabinet. It appears to all be the same thing? Coffee mugs? Cans? You have a lot of storage, maybe just use this space for “pretty.”

The dark Tan Brown granite on the perimeter perfectly ties in with the cabinets and warm tones of the island stone, without being too busy. There's no compelling reason to spend 8K to change it.

The backsplash on the other hand.........

A simple cream, with a bit of texture like Marazzi's RIce in Natural Structure, could work well. Or Daltile's Arcrafted in Coconut.

Agree, leave the stone, change the backsplash tile, add cabinet hardware and call it good.

Minardi and rebasheba, on your monitor (which we are all at the mercy of out here in internet land) does the orangey and dark brown of the perimeter countertops (not to mention the seriously dated speckles) look like a good match to the cognacs, greys, blacks, and creams of the island countertop? And the dark grey cabinets? The blond wood cabinets of the perimeter have a nice match with the colors of the island counters. To me, apologies Sara, the perimeter granite is easily as big a culprit in the dating of this kitchen as the backsplash. Sara wants them both gone, as she has stated. I think that’s a good plan! A solid creamy color would be really pretty too, but I guess that would have to be a Corian product?

What color cabinet hardware? Black?

Paint the island a warm brown. Do a cream backsplash. Call it good.

Yeah, I do think the gray island makes things harder than if it were in the taupe family or even a neutral brown.

If you want new counters, go for it. I just think the backsplash is the greater offender and the stone is workable if more of the other elements come together.

Black or bronze hardware, black might look a little harsh.
