G daylilies 2025

last modified: 10 months ago

Today is the day to show your G daylilies. I only have a handful.

Gently Down the Stream was a gift plant several seasons ago.

It has been a good addition, decent performer.

Get R Done has been a good performer, height is very close to stats. It is a reliable performer but had lower bud count last season.

Going Bananas has been here several seasons. Has been slow to establish…finally had a good season.

Getting Airborne had a lower bud count last season. height is close to stats for me.

Green Eyed Envy has been here a few seasons, had a great season. really good increase in bud count.

Sherry: Isn't it nice when a gift plant works out well. I like the colors on Gently Down The Stream..........I have only one G. It's new this year and probably the one I was most excited about. It did so well here, even in our high heat. I'm so hoping it pulls through winter.

    Green Icon:

It's going to be a tall one I think even in my container system. Another thing the scapes

are nice and sturdy and withstood a healthy blast of Oklahoma wind without staking.

Sherry - Gently Down the Stream makes a pretty clump! Green Eyed Envy is striking with its eye and bright throat.

Maryl - I've always been drawn to Green Icon but stopped buying dips a few years ago. Yours is gorgeous! I especially like the photo showing it with lavender companions.

    I don't have many G's anymore.

Gypsy Cats didn't have a great season with 2024's extreme heat and drought. This is a pic from 2023.

Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine is one of my best seedlings and always has good branching and a high bud count.

Grandma's Smile X Bubblegum Delicious is one of my favorite pink seedlings. It almost always reblooms well.

Sherry: GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM was an ok performer for me. It left the garden this past year.

Maryl: Love GREEN ICON. Hopefully it will be in my garden in the near future.

Debra: I really like GS x DV seedling.

Here is GREYWOODS CLAWS AND EFFECT: First year in the ground. I like this one.

Houzz is not letting me load any more photos. More to come.

Here is GREEN ICON from my trip to Cottage Gardens. It is a tall plant that is an attention getter.

I will have to try later to post more. Houzz is not being very cooperative today.

    Maryl, such a lovely photo!

Debra, glad you got some blooms posted. Love the two Grandmas Smile seedlings.

David , that Greywoods daylily is a winner. I am not always a toothy fan but the color won me over.

I sure hope Houzz shapes up today, such a pain at times! I still cant get into my profile.

Despite an inauspicious beginning from Houzz I will attempt my Gs. Sherry, Gently Down the Stream is a lovely clump. Maryl, I am so glad you got Green Icon and hope it survives! Debra, the seedlings are great and I am glad they made the move. David, the Greywoods bloom photo is so pretty.

Green Icon-It truly is a looker.

Garden Butterfly has quickly become a favorite

    Gwendolyn Rose

Golden Globe is so different and interesting

Golden Child looks amazing in a clump

Golden Delicious in its first year compliments of Kay

    Garry Bewyck -first year

    Great Balls of Fire

Let's see how Houzz treats me today.

Nice G's.! I like Great Balls of Fire, Green Icon, and Gwendolyn Rose. Also, Greywoods Claws and Effect and Debra's Grandma's Smile seedling.

    Here are my G's.

You all know how I feel about Geometric Wizard. It didn't perform very well this past season.

Glowing Quasar is a favorite of mine.

Golden Glitz is one I picked up cheap from a club sale. It is a wonderful grower, making a nice display in the late garden.

Gryphon Chinese Fire reminds me of Ruby Spider, but I think the plant is better.

Gryphon Stanley Saxton is another of Stelter's Gryphon series, which all have some form of Fulva in their immediate background.

Gryphon Warsaw Rising is another from Gil Stelter. Bob has almost all of the Gryphons.

Gwaya May was new last year and it produced some nice blooms. We can't wait to see what it does this upcoming season.

That's all of the G's for today.

I am making another attempt to post:

This is GOD OF WAR from Cottage Gardenbs. I think it is a Gossard intro and showing off two large blooms. (Sorry about the photo not being centered - I was going through the garden quickly to see as many of the 4,000 he grows.)

GIANT ARMADILLO: Another one from my trip to Cottage Gardens.

GALA GOLD: A much older Bennett intro. This photo is from Cottage Gardens and it came home with me. I found it rather funny that this was the first plant I saw and it happened to be a Bennett. Destined to come home with me.

GREAT WHITE: A wonderful plant if you are tight on space. It has been slow to increase. It has a nice scape and is well budded. I think I need to use it in hybridizing, as I hear it is a color clarifier.

    That is all from me.

This morning Houzz was completely down so no wonder many of you had problems posting.

Sherry, Gently Down The Stream hits all my buttons~~beautiful! I also like Getting Airborne.

Maryl, Your Green Icon is very pretty; green often fades away in the heat for may daylilies, so it is impressive. Yours does seem to be lighter than David and Kate's.

Debra, I really love all three of yours!! I narrowed it to Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine as my favorite of these.

David, God of War is beautiful, which is ironic considering the name.

Kate, Golden Globe and Gwendolyn Rose are wonderful colors and designs.

Nancy, Gryphon Chinese Fire is a beauty!!

Glory to His Name has become one of my favorites. Love the color and design.

Green Inferno had a wonderful year this year.

Grape Velvet is nice but not exceptional in any way [especially has low bud count and skips years] so this fall it was demoted to a less desirable place.

    Mantis,

Cottage Gardens is about 9 miles south of Lake Ontario. Yes it is a Zone warmer than my location. I am near the NY/PA border. I am Zone 5 and Cottage Gardens is in Zone 6.

Green Icon looks wonderful in so many gardens. Even though I rarely add dips anymore, I might have to add that one since it looks so distinctive.

Mantis - Your photos of Gary Bewcyk always look purple, but I see it's registered as a back red. Would you say it most often looks purple or red in your garden? It is so striking! Glowing Quasar always looks good in photos I see here. I remember seeing in years ago in the Rice's greenhouse before they registered it, and I liked it much better than Bass Gibson. Guayabera is a pretty thing!

If Bass Gibson were taller and had fewer funky blooms, I think it would be the superior cultivar. It certainly has more teeth. GQ opens more consistently and is considerably taller. Bass in 2024.

Actually, I didn't save any pics of Garry Bewcyk this year. I see that the pic I posted is from 2023 (Apple wouldn't transfer any labeled pics to this new computer from before 2023, but I do have them on my old Intel model). I divided GB fall 2023 and didn't have many picture-worthy blooms in 2024. It is black red, but not as red as most pictures show. It is, like many darks, difficult to capture, in that too much light produces reddish tones (even though the bloom in front of you is blackish) and too little light (early morning) produces purplish tones. I think that my photo on the NGA database (after I just got the plant) captures the color well; most of the photos there are too reddish, and a few are purplish. It is not as dark as Ashwood Dark Side or Night Wings. Those two cultivars may slick here, but don't have splotches. Also, GB has good height and decent bud count.

I see that the person Garry B left us in 2024 at age 79.

Here's a pic from 2022 that is closer, but it can look darker. Kate's picture shows how saturated the color can be.

And here's the pot pic I took in 2017.

Mantis - Thanks for the extra photos of Gary Bewcyk! I think it would be a great one to cross with Blood of the Martyrs. I had Bass Gibson for many years, and it never performed well for me - probably because grubs ate most of the roots the first year I had it. For some reason, I've always preferred the look of Glowing Quasar. The color, although similar to Bass Gibson, just seems more pleasing to me.
