Wrong cookware set sent (update)

Scroll down-thread for update...

I received my fancy-schmancy Demeyere cookware set from Williams Sonoma today, and they sent the wrong stuff. I ordered the Industry 5, and they sent a mix of mostly Atlantis 7 with a couple Proline mixed in. AAARGH!!

I'm torn on whether to return it and find another set somewhere else or keep it. DH thinks it's too heavy for me -- and my heavens the A-7 pieces ARE heavy -- but OTOH I got some really expensive cookware at a (relative) bargain price, it sure is nice stuff, and what a PITA to trudge it back to the brick-and-mortar (I will need DH's help with that, it's hard enough to lift one pan let alone a big box of pans).

What to do, what to do....

Well now that you touched all the lines, which would you choose with all things being equal? Do you like what you received other than it not matching? Maybe this was a silver lining so you could touch them all and then make a choice?

Taking them back to the store doesn’t have to be a huge deal if you feel in love with one of the lines. Look at it like a bonus shopping trip before your final decision.

It's beautiful stuff but my fear is it's just much too heavy.

Personally I'd return it if I didn't want it. If Williams-Sonoma sent the wrong stuff, IMO it's up to Williams-Sonoma to arrange for collection and replacing it with what was ordered. If they won't come to the party to fix their mistake, I would be leaving a scathing review.

I agree with Colleen ... and Joan.

But it doesn't make sense. These things usually come in a display box, and I've never heard of them mixing lines. Are the contents what the box says? Because it sounds like they sent you random overstock and/or returns rather than what you ordered

Was there a packing list? Does it match what you were sent? Do you think maybe you got someone else's order?

If you like them, consider keeping them. If not, have your husband put them in your car, and get a W-S staffer to get them out. That's what they're there for. Or, if you're around in the day time, you can call and ask them to send you a pickup tag. I've done that, but it might be easier to take them to the store, and have the store do your reorder. Or go to the fancy schmancy store that has Demeyere on the floor, and buy from them...

“But it doesn't make sense. These things usually come in a display box, and I've never heard of them mixing lines.”

Agree. Are you close to a WS store?

"These things usually come in a display box, and I've never heard of them mixing lines. Are the contents what the box says? Because it sounds like they sent you random overstock and/or returns rather than what you ordered"

The items were individually boxed, and all of those boxes placed inside one great big cardboard shipping box.

oop, upside down but you can see definitely Atlantis.

ETA: All the pieces in the set are there technically, but the sizes are slightly different than the Industry (e.g. 1.5 qt vs 2 qt)

ETA #2: "Are you close to a WS store?"

Yes, I have a couple of Williams-Sonoma within a reasonable driving distance.

Yeah, that's not a ”set”. That's someone trying to fill your order from open stock. Unless it's a combo W-S created themselves—but it's still not what you ordered.

If you think it's heavy now, just think how much heavier it will be in a few years. Pans that never gave me trouble before seem to be much heavier now that I am older.

Did you receive any Industry 5 pieces? If so, did you like it? You could return the whole mess to W&S and order directly from zwilling if you want to start over. But W&S should help make it right. I know I probably would not want the heavy stuff even if it was a sale.

“Yes, I have a couple of Williams-Sonoma within a reasonable driving distance.”

Then I would go and have them correct the order.

I would also take them back to WS. If they are heavy now, they'll be heavier with food in them and even heavier in a couple of years.

If I spent money on a set of cookware that should last my lifetime, I'd want to make sure it was something that I'd be able to use for that time and not possibly be too heavy to deal with in the future.

I know several people who have "outgrown" their cast iron because of the weight, so it would be a shame for that to happen with these pans.

Let us know what you decide.

I'd call before you drive over there, just in case what you want isn't in stock at the store. And the weight is a valid concern: I find that my big skillet (Caraway) is hard on my wrist when I'm trying to hold the pan in one hand and the lid in another to drain browned meat. I make my SO do that.

They should give you something for your trouble, IMO. Doesn't hurt to ask.

My large yellow Le Creuset ( approx 3 quarts ) which I have had for 40 years has become too heavy for me when laden with food. I still use it but get DH to move it for me. Hope you get cookware you’re more happy with PChop.

This Le Creuset lasagna pan (pic from online) was a wedding gift in 1977. I gave it away long ago due to the weight…even when empty. Crazy heavy when filled with lasagna!

@chicagoans - this may be a common practice but new to me. I saw someone on a cooking reel scoot all the meat to one side of the pan (when still on the stove) and place a paper towel held by tongs into the now open space to suck up all the grease. Repeat as necessary, but one seemed to do it. No lifting the pan or handling a hot pan/meat or worries about pouring hot grease.

^^ That is a great tip -- seems so DUH! but I never thought of it. Thanks for mentioning it!

“…and place a paper towel held by tongs into the now open space to suck up all the grease.”

Olychick, it’s something I’ve done for years after watching my mom do it. Not sure if it’s common but definitely makes it easy. Depending on the amount of fat/grease, I’ll often move the pan off the burner and prop one side up with a folded hot pad. The grease runs to the open space in the pan, then I wad up paper towels to soak it up.👍🏻

I’m another for return it. You knew what you wanted, they sent you the wrong thing, it doesn’t work for you, and it wasn’t a small sum either.

@Olychick thank you! I will try that. (It will also mean that I don't have to take the top off of an empty can of sparkling water or similar to pour the grease into.)

I was looking at the weights for the Altantis set WS sells. A 10.5 pound sauté pan? Yikes! It’s no wonder even their 11” skillet has a helper handle!

Best Lightweight Cookware (Top 5 Brands Reviewed)

The All-Clad Graphite Core stuff is pretty cool, super light, and does not have the polarizing "U" handle, but the price!!! 2.2 lb is appreciably lighter than the 4.1 lb Demyere Industry, but 2X the price.

What bothers me more about All-Clas than the U handle (which doesn’t bother me at all) is the shape of the pan. There’s so little flat bottom for the pan size. Comparing my Calphalon and All-Clad 12 inch skillets, the outer dismeters are identical but the flat portion of the bottoms differ by at least an inch, thus effectively making the surface area of the All-Clad 20% smaller. The 12.5” Demeyere appear comparable to my Calphalon, but they’re not included with the sets I’ve seen. So another $200….

Update: Well, Sur La Table had the Industry-5 set in stock with very speedy 2-day free shipping, so I ordered a set. THEY actually sent the right stuff!

(There's also an 8-inch frying pan and a 5-Plus 6.5-qt saute pan in the cardboard boxes in the back, from a different supplier)

This stuff is much lighter than the Atlantis that W.S. mistakenly sent. These pieces are hefty, but they're not unwieldy for me. The only one that might be a bit of trouble for me is the 8-qt stockpot, but it probably won't be one that's in regular use.

That 6.5 qt 5-Plus saute pan in the cardboard box in the back is lighter than the Atlantis 3.5 qt that is half it's size - 8.5# for the Atlantis vs just under 5# for the 5-Plus....did I mention the 3.5 qt Atlantis is HALF the size!?! So, If any of you are considering Demeyere, I'm steering you away from the Atlantis based on the weight = ridiculous.

I'm going to take the W.S. Atlantis set back to the store this weekend. That's rather obvious, isn't it.
