Is this the front or back of the house?

    Front

The window placement is, um, unusual, for the front of a house. So the landscaping should be designed to minimize that.

Adding porches, specifically porch roofs, is an exercise in geometry. How do the angles intersect? How do the porch angles relate to the rest of the house? This is going to be a tough one since it doesn't look like there is enough room above the door to have a porch with the roof slope matching the rest of the house.

Landscaping suggestions will have to wait until we know where in the world the house is located.

Is it possible to enlarge the windows on the left extension (garage?) and the one on the right which seems small for a front window? If not, a porch could camoflage the imbalance some. If I added a porch, I would run it all the way across the front. For landscaping ideas, it would be good to see a photo taken from farther back showing the entire front yard.

That said, always start with the largest plants: trees.

I kind of like celery’s rendering above. H/she has distracted the eye from the very unusual window/door size/placement. I might go even further down that path and add one or two more fat columns on the porch.

A fine healthy ORNAMENTAL SIZE (mature height of 25’ or less) tree at the corner of the porch would help too.

Can you do anything about the very unfortunate window placements/sizes? If not, Celery's rendition is likely to be your best bet.

hey heather congrats on the new build! adding a porch is such a vibe i did something similar with my cousins place last spring honestly tho the roof angle gave us headaches at first. like do you match the pitch of the main house or go flatter for contrast? we ended up doing a low-slope metal roof that kinda mirrored the garage overhang and it tied everything together.

material-wise i’d say mix textures if you can? we used reclaimed wood for pillars but paired it with composite decking so it doesnt warp. oh and if youre going for plants maybe throw in some lavender or rosemary near the steps smells amazing when it rains.

speaking of roofs tho there was this one crew my buddy hired for his barn-to-studio conversion super chill guys who basically did magic blending old/new roofing without making it look Frankensteined. they kept saying “flow matters more than matchin” and honestly it stuck with me. maybe check local contractors who get that balance

lighting is key too! we strung up these solar lanterns from the eaves and added low-voltage path lights…game changer for evening hangs. watch out for HOA rules tho they nearly shut us down over railing height lol

what style you leaning toward? rustic/modern? anyway good luck!

    Something like this?

Looks like you have an absolutely beautiful location!

I like what celery and simply natural have proposed. makes it look more like the front of a house instead of the back.

There are many options you can do, with that backyard, it all depends on the look you like to end up with.

If you leave me a message on my profile page, I will reply and maybe I can help you achieve exactly what you want with all the details ready for a hardscape contractor or landscaper to provide you with a quote.

I just did a design for a local homeowner and they have also been back and forth back and forth until they came up with exactly what they want and need.

    Here is an example

This is what we started out with,

    This was the final design.

    Good luck!
