mudroom / laundry options

Hi Houzzers!

My mudroom is about 9x5 and I don't like having dirty, slushy boots where I am cleaning my clothes. I also hang a lot to dry and could use some space for this. I really appreciate Patricia Colwell's suggestion to build a vestibule into the garage to create a new space!

The first option is to create a new laundry room behind the kitchen on the left. I only have 57" between the walls and I would like the sink nearby and some counter space.. I would have to purchase new machines for this one.

The second option is to create a mudroom here and leave the laundry in its current space. If no one is walking behind and there are no coats or boots it is just wide enough. There would be a pocket door to the kitchen from the mudroom.

Both options provide much need closet space and a separation of the two rooms. On the left of the kitchen is the family room and on the right are the dining and living rooms.

Please let me know your thoughts on these options or if there is another layout that is feasible.

You have another thread on this? where is it? I'm afraid I don't understand well enough to vote or comment. How many people live here, how many muddy boots are we talking about??

One thing to consider is your path to the laundry closet, like I think in one design the layout makes you pass by all the muddy boots with the laundry basket anyway. Could there be a different access to the laundry from the other side?

@rebasheba The other thread was about changing my g-shaped kitchen to a galley. That part is done and the option for an extension wasn’t included in that discussion. There are 3 of us. the issue is that the existing 18” closet is where my mops and swiffer etc are so the coats are on hooks and the boots are right in front of the laundry machines.

Hello, and here are both options with some pros and cons:

Option 1: New Laundry Room

Pros: convenient location off the kitchen, separates the laundry from the mudroom mess, could add more storage or counter space.

Cons: 57" width may be a tight squeeze, new machines needed, more cost.

Option 2: Mudroom with Pocket Door

Pros: inexpensive, catches dirt/slush, adds closet space, pocket door saves space.

Cons: will feel tight if narrow, need good ventilation to dry clothes.

Other Ideas:

Consider Patricia's vestibule idea for boots/coats.

Utilize vertical space-wall-mounted racks and hooks-to maximize functionality.

If budget allows, Option 1 offers better separation, but Option 2 is practical and cost-efficient. Sketch both layouts to visualize! Good luck! ????
