This boring exterior needs some help! Please advise!!

Hello!! This is my son's little place. It was hit by hurricane Milton and he lost his screened in front porch (the piece over the peak was a part of that and will be removed.) He doesn't want to replace the screen, just add some railing around the porch and then paint the porch a lighter color. He also wants to paint the front door and possibly the shutters. Any suggestions on colors and any other minor cosmetic changes he could make? He's single and an EMT so he doesn't have a lot of money for major changes. Thanks in advance!

I like the idea of a turquoise door, and I think, the shutters add something to his house, and taking them off, would soon show that. I like the idea of printed cushions and an outdoor rug. I also think, some nice big potted plants would be nice. It needs some brighter colors there.

That deck needs a railing and the shutters do not belong on those windows and some color maybe a nice outdoor rug with those chairs spryed a color from the rug Bigger planters and filled with seasonal plants . A new front door and a awning over it and what is that above and behind the gable on the right

Pick new chair cushions in a print. Use one of the colors from the print for the front door and shutter paint. The railings, including step railing, can be black or white: as an EMT, he knows that preventing falls is important.

Patricia has the right idea.

Lose the useless shutters.

Lose the fussy high maintenance flower boxes ,replace with large pots of easy care plants /trees at base of windows.

Put larger house numbers where easily seen ,maybe above the right side windows.

Need a sturdy railing at steps and deck perimeter.

Awning for now over front door to shield visitors from inclement weather.

If planning to use deck as chill spot may want to eventually roof over with bigger awning or pergola type structure,then no need to "beautify" entrance door.

Outdoor rug and cushioned chairs as you like.

Paint the door turquoise. Leave the deck the same color. Get some turquoise cushions for the chairs.

Yes, the plan is to have railing around the deck installed, as I metioned. I never thought about losing the shutters but I like that idea!! Thanks for all the great advice!!

We all like turquoise, but some men prefer a less tropical blue. Navy and white always looks crisp. I might expand the deck, too. There's a lot of concrete around the house and more deck looks better than concrete.

I don't think anyone expects the shutters on this style of house to be or look functional. Plenty of plain midcentury houses had shutters put on "as build" to add some color or texture to an otherwise very plain house. I personally don't like them when they are incorrectly installed or sized on a traditional style house that looks like it "should" have shutters.
