Nearly five years after COVID first emerged, I finally tested positive last week. I worked at a school during the height of the pandemic, and although I got sick and tested a few times over the past five years, I never had a positive result. I've been good about my shots and boosters.

My husband came down with it for the third time last week. We had been traveling a lot by car, and I thought if I didn't get it this time, I would definitely contact a medical university to see if I had natural immunity or if I was one of those people who never show symptoms.

Well, I guess I jinxed it.

I felt pretty miserable for about 48 hours. My energy is back now, and I no longer have a fever, but my sense of smell and taste are still off. Thankfully, food still tastes okay, so that’s a relief.

Sending my sympathies to those who’ve had a worse experience. Even with my mild case, it was surprisingly rough.

I'm sorry you're sick. I dodged COVID repeatedly until November last year. Happened to sit next to a colleague who had it (but wasn't yet showing symptoms) and finally tested positive. I don't think I had or have long COVID but I was surprised at how long (weeks) it took me to return to my normal amounts of energy. Maybe the latest strain is better at dodging the immune systems of those of us that didn't catch it in the first few years.

I got Covid for the first time last August. I truly thought I would be one of those who never got it (like my daughter, so far). I didn't feel too bad but I got Paxlovid anyway. The taste was far far worse than I thought it would be, especially waking up in the middle of the night with it. So gross. Nevertheless, my symptoms went away and I tested negative. And then I got the rebound effect. I was expecting it weeks later, but it came days later.

I never lost my sense of smell/taste.

    I‘m glad you’re feeling better.

I lost my novid status last year. I only tested because dh tested positive. I felt mostly fine but went on paxlovid to stop it in its tracks and lessen the chances of developing long covid.

I also stay current with boosters. My sister didnt get a booster and she got slammed with covid earlier this month.

It’s very much still out there.

Hope you continue to feel better deegw. I managed to avoid a positive covid test until late September 2023 when DH and I just returned from a trip to Italy, with stops in England and Ireland. We were both down for about 4-5 days then recovered, although I had a cough that lasted a couple of months. We consider ourselves lucky that we only got it once, and stay up to date with boosters. In addition to not wanting to deal with long covid, I also care for my compromised 91 year old Mom who I live in fear of exposing to anything.

Oh well, I lasted until 2024 and then got it. It wasn't bad at all, and I was up to date with all the boosters. I hope yours is the same.....the only thing I've found is that since then, when I've gotten a cold or been under the weather, it seems to last a bit longer. I used to be sick for a day and then be over it. It seems at least in my mind, that since covid, things are a little different.

Anyway heal well and be done with it!

Hub and i are still among the few, though all our kids and grandkids have had it. Keeping our fingers crossed we stay this way. Our son had it before anyone knew what it was and he still has long covid.

Sheeshie, I'm sorry that your son still has long covid. After getting sick, I was re-reading the CDC info about covid and realized that I had forgotten just how bad that first version was.

deegw I'm sorry you've been 'caught' after all this time. I am still knocking wood. Long covid is the real scare as the immediate symptoms of the newer cases appear to be tolerable for most.

  • last year

I have (knock on wood) never had it, although I have been down a week at a time with the latest respiratory virus. I think I am FINALLY over it. I have started to call it the Dog Show Virus, because I came down with it after a dog show on Dec. 8, then was fine over Christmas and New Years, then had a relapse after a show on Jan. 4!! I had one shot, which nearly killed me, and have never tested. I would NOT take another THING they offered, anyway!! I will treat my symptoms (as I have always done). Sorry to those who believe....I no longer do.

My sympathies - Hubby and I just got over it a week ago, after managing to dodge it for all these years. He was 24 hours ahead of me, and I'm pretty sure he got it and brought it home to me because he stopped masking. I also was beginning to think I was going to dodge it forever. Neither of us were sick enough to need Paxlovid. The worst part was an extremely painful throat - I never realized how often I reflexively swallowed until it became agonizing. I'm very glad we're vaxxed and boosted, as it could've been much worse. As it was, we were both sick for about 10 days. The painful throat lasted about 48 hours.

I also lost my sense of smell, and have only partially regained it ☹️

I was able to avoid it until this past August after returning home from a cruise. My daughter got it our 3rd day out and my granddaughter tested positive as soon as we got home. I did a couple days later. I didn't want to take a flight to take a cruise because of the reports of high covid rates when flying, so we drove to one departing Boston. Well, that didn't work!. I had a lingering throat issue and was really fatigued for 3 weeks but nothing much worse.

Dee so sorry you had to get covid at all. That's just awful, but so glad your over it.....

So sorry you got it, but glad you are recovering! Feel better soon!

I too have never had Covid and have gone to extremes not to get it. As others have said, it is more so long covid that I'm concerned about than covid itself.

I had some kind of cold flu 16 years ago that left me with asthma that has been life altering. I can only imagine what Covid would do to me long term.

Dee, I hope you feel stronger and better every day.

DH and I had it once, at the same time, a few years ago. It hit him much worse than me.

Dee and CarolB, I am glad that you are both feeling better. DH and I escaped it for 4 years. 13 months later, I still have long covid.

Sheeshie, I am so very sorry to hear about your son. Evidently the people who got long Covid in the very beginning are the ones who have it the worst. It's one of those horrible, mostly invisible illnesses. I pray that he will recover.

I assume that I have had it but never tested positive. I cared for others in the family while they were sick. My older daughter has had it a couple of times. She stays on top of her boosters. Interestingly, the last time she had it was worse than the previous times.

Good to hear you're feeling better, and I hope your taste/smell return to normal quickly.

I got it for the first time ever last summer. On vacation in Cape Cod. Spent almost the entire week in bed. It was not fun and ruined my entire vacation. And DH's because he refused to leave the house in case I needed something even though I kept insisting he go out with our DD, SIL and grands and enjoy himself. He did go out to dinner with them one night, but that was the only time he left. And then he got it the day we were leaving. Thankfully, I was OK enough at that point to drive us home (~6 hours).
