Landscape for privacy

I need suggestions for landscaping a strip of bedding between the pool deck and the fence. There used to be a tall elm tree on the other side of the fence in my neighbor's yard that provided privacy and shade. Unfortunately, it had to be removed because the roots invaded under the pool deck and lifted it. The bedding is 30 feet long by 2 feet (closest to the pool pump) to 5 feet wide (by the gate). The fence is 6 feet tall. I cannot plant anything with deep roots near the pool pipes, but perhaps some sort of trellis might work. I would love to have a japanese maple tree or some sort of interesting and tidy tree near the gate. I have mature crepe myrtles in the front which are lovely, but l regret planning them so close to the pool.
