M daylilies 2025

last modified: 10 months ago

Let us see your M daylilies today.

Magic Lake has been here a long time, not in an ideal spot.

Magnificent Rainbow is fairly new to the garden.

Mary’s Baby, love that it is sunfast.

Minnesota Morning was a bonus three seasons ago…another great performer.

Mr Skeffington has done well.

Moonlit Masquerade got moved in the fall. It was getting crowded by a huge clematis.

Mary Todd was the first daylily in my garden in 1996.

Magic Dancer got rescued after a fence replacement. The new fence was added in the fall and I found a big lump of dirt with sprouts in the spring…..it survived the ordeal.

Morrocan Sunrise has had good inrease and bud count.

Mage Quest

Megatron is new to the garden.

Sherry: That picture of Mary Todd shows why it's still popular. I hated to let mine go when downsizing. Mine did need staking at times though...Glad you saved Magic Dancer and you know how much I like Mary's Baby........Just a couple of M's for me.

Muy Caliente has earned its keep in my garden. On a hot hazy summer day it calls out to anyone who passes by. Good color retention even in our heat.

Mary's Baby: Almost lost it last year, but it managed to pump out a few blooms anyway:

It's an amazing day here today. The sun is out (a rarity for us in February) and the temperatures are in the low 60's. We are going out shortly to do some cleaning up in the garden. We also have started planting seeds, which in my mind, means the beginning of our daylily season.

Mary's Baby and Maui Sunrise are two of my favorites today. We grew Mary's Baby for years, but then decided to divide it. It didn't like that and we ended up losing all of it. That same thing happened to its parent, Mary Lightfine.

Maryl, I am so glad Muy Caliente! has performed well for you.

Mardi Gras Indian is richly colored in our garden.

Mary Claibourne Davis is a club plant that will be returning to the club this spring. It's nice, but not nice enough (or distinct enough) to earn a place in our downsized garden.

We like the intensity of the color of Mayan Warrior.

The Mayor of Munchkinland finally joined our garden last year. Unfortunately, it got covered in weeds so I hope it's ok.

Mean Green is new to the garden.

Moving Forward is a southern-bred daylily that has done well for us.

    Here is our Muy Caliente!.

My Little Tea Set has always been one of my favorite small flowered daylilies.

    That's all for me.

Debra: You grow Miss Goldie Gold Digger beautifully. In my garden up close and personal, I really never came to fully appreciate the UF form, but that's me. I am old school maybe, but the form on Memphis still is the one that sends me. So pretty.......Nan: Mardi Gras Indian does intrigue me. I just wonder how that intense shade of deep orange will hold here. I never expected a hybrid daylily from Indiana to hold it's color as well as Muy Caliente does. Congratulations. I hope you produce more with the same sunfast attribute........Maryl

Sherry, what a spectacular clump of Mary Todd! I like Mage Cayse.

Maryl, what great color on Muy Caliente! Mary’s Baby is always so dark in your garden.

Debra, Make It Snappy!! Hope it thrives for you as well as Michael Davisson.

Nancy, Moving Forward is a pretty one.

Merlot on My Mind-I really like this one

    Mean Green

    Miss Mayhem

    Mister Mayor

    Moonlight Mischief

    Mary’s Baby

    Mister Green Jeans

Money Maker-another one I really like!

Multiple Multiplications-name is a misnomer! It does not ”multiply” very well!!

    Magic of Oz

    Memphis is a winner

    Megillah makes a pretty clump

    My Utmost For His Highest

    Mexicali Blues

Magenta Wonder bloomed first year in a pot. It did not bloom last season in the ground.

    Mountain Orchid

I left a comment earlier, but it doesn't seem to be here.

Maryl - Memphis has the large, ruffly round form I like too! Miss Goldie is a good one, although the grubs got to the outside fans in my Nashville garden.

Kate - You have so many pretty M's! Megillah looks great in that clump, and Money Maker is so striking!

Nancy - Mayan Warrior is a standout. Are Mardi Gras Indian and Muy Caliente! just about the same color?

Kate: Love the photo of MOUNTAIN ORCHID.

MISTER MAYOR is very attractive in the photos posted.

MYSTIC GREENS: This photo was taken at COTTAGE GARDENS

    Now from my garden:

METAPHYSICAL MOMENT: One of the few Lambertson's that does well in my zone.

MARY ALCIE STOKES: A great Dan Hansen intro for my zone. Early season blooms are al red with the white midrib. As the season progresses, it looks like the photo.

MANDALAY BAY MUSIC: Does well for me, but is a slow increaser.

MANDALAY BAY MUSIC: Same bloom later in the day with different lighting.

MIDNIGHT RAIDER: A nice black purple. Good increaser.

MAN OF SORROWS: New to my garden.

    MEGATRON: Wonderful plant.

MOMENTUM: An interesting color. It is supposed to be a good parent.

    MICHAEL BENNETT: A nice purple.

    That is it from me.

Debra, to me Mardi Gras Indian's color is more intense plus it has the red eye. My observation, though, is Mardi Gras Indian is more of a bouquet bloomer and doesn't last very long. A mature clump of Muy Caliente! produces lots of scapes and seems to bloom longer.

Nancy - Thanks for your response about colors and bloom habit on those intensely colored oranges!

David - It's interested to see Mandalay Bay Music with different colors in different lighting situations. I grew it in a pot for several years and was always surprised that Salter registered it as near white. It always looked lavender or pink for me. I like Michael Bennett!

Magnify the Lord - I forgot about this Emmerich with an M name. I didn't get a photo of it last year. This is from a previous year.

Kate, such great photos! It’s hard to remember you had so many problems with those darn bugs. Hope this season sees none of those critters!

Thanks, Sherry! Almost all these photos are from my big front bed. My road beds and back beds were totally decimated, perhaps due to more adjoining vegetation (like woods that may have harbored host weeds) And, yes, fingers crossed, I have a bug plan to put into place!!

Sherry, Moroccan Sunrise and Mage Quest are my favorites, nice blooms and color.

Maryl, Muy Calienta and Mary's Baby are my favorites of yours.

Debra, Maui Sunrise is always wonderful to see!!! Mr. Mayor is very beautiful!

Nancy, Mardi Gras Indian and Mary Claiborne Davis are both very pretty!

Kate, Money Maker and Mequillah are great colors!

David, Mystic Green is quite interesting and Man of Sorrows of beautiful.

    Malaysian Monarch

    Mediterranean Sailor

    Metaphor

Milano Crimson Tide, a picture that captures a lot of the black on it.

    Maleny Empire Rose

I just call this Merlot for its color. Lost the name years ago. Good reliable late, sunfast.

Maleny Empire Rose I remember is an Australian one. The white midrib is vivid against the hot rose, but I also remember that it is not a good increaser. Metaphor is appealing; Gates produced a lot of good plants. I still have Sultry Siren, and it captures attention from visitors.

Moroccan Sunrise has that vintage Munson watermark; I see that it is rather short.

Mystic Maize's picture is a light yellow that I like. I wonder why some pics show a golden yellow. I like it, but fear that it would be too late for me.

Years ago, I remember Richard Norris saying that Momentum was a good parent. It has over 100 progeny.

Mary Alice Stokes was not good this past year. Few blooms. It is a Hansen. Nice face on Mystic Greens.

Mary's Baby got zapped by the heat this past year, but Mary Lightfine (an evergreen) looked good. It's not in a prime location,

Mister Mayor is vigorous and attractive. I prefer a scape that is not so upfacing.

Mean Green I don't remember having an off year.

Mai Tai had a so-so year.

My Utmost for His Highest. A tall plant with flowers that are rather upfacing. Blooms later than I like.

Marian Cavanagh has eye-catching flowers. Buds can be crowded.

Man of Sorrows was especially vivid.

Makayla Jenelle is a color that I like. Scapes are not really high above the foliage, but stand out.

Mystery of the Ages needs to add a few inches in height. We shall see.

I enjoyed the variable forms of Madam Bessemar in 2024 (Schwarz).

Minnesota Nice blooms in abundance. A bit lighter than usual in 2024 heat.

Money Maker is a nice earlier one. Does better than RFK did.

Miss Marie. Fairly short so far.

My Heart Belongs to Daddy was recently divided.

Make It Snappy came into its own last season.

Mitch Lynd glows. It is fairly short, but well budded (Norris).

Mardi Gras Indian is an intense color.

Emmerich's Mighty in Battle is a deep color. I would prefer a slightly larger bloom.

Mister Butters is a beacon in the early garden. A neighbor always comments on it.

David: Mystic Green caught my eye. Too bad it's a Pierce evergreen. No way with my pot system would it survive outside over winter. I like Man of Sorrows too........Brad: Milano Crimson Tide looks velvety and Metaphor is such a pretty color for you. Have you ever tried English Lavender? Debra used to grow it beautifully and it was right in your color range...........Mantis: Mitch Lynd looks marvelous in your clump shot. I need to order NO more daylilies, but then I come across a Norris daylily and I have to put it down on my long list. The last few winters have taken a toll on my Mary's Baby so I ordered another one for back up for this spring. I will always try and find room for her...........Maryl

Maryl, No, I've never had English Lavender but I remember seeing it and loving it.

Mantis, I love Marian Cavanagh as it has form, color and style that are my favorites. I also like Make it Snappy, quite vivid. I also like Man of Sorrows.
