It is perennial......just not evergreen. Like many other warm season OG's, it dies back in winter and should be cut back hard before new growth begins in spring.

Thank you. As in, cut back hard to a few inches? I gather that it also might like a top-dressing of N in the spring.

I like to remove as much old growth as possible, so I cut as low as feasible. And I have never known any OG that required any fertilization but I guess you could if you feel the need.

Got some feedback from our Watershed Protection folks. They put this stuff on stream embankments around town to stabilize the embankments. They just ignore it, and let it do it's thing. So i gather that if you have the ability, trimming probably increases available sunlight, but no problem if you don't. I will trim.
