last modified: 10 months ago

Today show us your R daylilies.

Reindeer Antlers is sun fast here in all day sun. Good increase for me.

Real Wind is an oldie I will always have. The color is so luscious…..this photo is a good representation.

Rosy’ Cotton Ribbons was marvelous the first season here. Such great substance and bud count for a new addition……love it!

Ruby Spider

Ruby Storm is new to the garden.

Red Suspenders had its leap year last season…..great increase.

My favorite is Real Wind. I grew it many moons ago and the colors just didn't hold in our heat. It's so unusual and so pretty that I'm happy to see it in your garden every year. It obviously lives its best under your care...........I have a few R's.

This first one is a story of how turning up the heat here can affect color.

    Royal Banner in the 80's:

Royal Banner a week later in the mid 90's:

Rethink Pink at 100 degrees. Little pink on the edges remains, but the bold faced green/white color still appeals to me. Blooms well for me too.

Rudy's Sister: Finally registered with the AHS. Stats to follow after further evaluation. Blooms early so color is not challenged by our high heat. Good substance to petals, with consistent petal arrangement and form.

Rainbow Maker is one of the few dips I brought with me. I like the blue eye, and it was always such a good rebloomer. In recent years it was short in height and buds because of extreme grub predation.

Roman Cohort is oldie I like. I know it grows well for Mantis and another daylily friend in Illinois. It's proven to be a good parent for me.

Roman Cohort X The Ultimate Sacrifice is one of my taller red seedlings.

Rosie With a Ring is a Derrow I like a lot.

Royal Cypher is the best-budded Petit I grew. It has given me some really pretty seedlings.

Here's a Royal Cypher seedling with a pretty face. I didn't bring it because the bud count was under 10.

Ruth Watkins Davidson is a beautiful pink and an excellent pod setter. In Nashville it was well-budded both years and rebloomed beautifully.

Sherry, I love the color of Reindeer Antlers. I didn't get a photo of ours last season. Rosie Cotton's Ribbons is looking good.

Maryl, your observation on heat affecting color is interesting. The past two seasons here June has been hot with little rain. That definitely affects color.

Debra, I like the Royal Cipher seedling. I love the shades of color in the eye and the nice sepals. Your Rosie with a Ring is looking great.

Rattlesnake Rake has a unique look.

Reindeer Games was new to the garden. I can't wait to see a clump of these.

I like the color of Remedy but not the shape. I don't like that much recurve on the petals.

Remembered Kisses remains one of my favorites. I think our clump needs divided though as it has not performed as well recently as it did in the past.

Rocky Top was putting on a show last season.

I love the flowers of Rose F. Kennedy. I hope it performs better now that it is out of the weeds.

Rose Titan is aptly named as it is a large flower.

Here is our Rosie Cotton's Ribbons.

This is our Rosie with a Ring. We are seeing some pretty babies out of this.

    More to come . . .

I love this simple little bicolor. It is Rosy Wren.

Rosy Sparkler was new to the garden. I love the flower. I hope it turns out to be vigorous.

Ruckus has been in the garden for quite awhile. I don't love the color.

Another one new to the garden, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer is a smallish diploid. The bloom is registered at 5 inches, but I think our flowers have been smaller than that.

    That's all for me.

Nancy - I think that Royal Cypher seedling got the shading in the eye from the other parent, Stenciled Infusion. I like the color and shape of Remedy. Remembered Kisses is a nice red-eyed cultivar.

Maryl - Interesting how temperature changes the color on Royal Banner.

Sherry - Real Wind is my favorite of yours. I like those colors together. I used to grow that one many years ago, but it dwindled away as its place became more and more shady.

Sherry, I too like Real Wind. It was in my garden until the great vole invasion. I agree about Reindeer Antlers. Mine was a deer victim last season. (deer and bugs!!)

Maryl, Rudy’s Sister is a striking bloom.

Debra, Ruth Watkins Davidson is a pretty one. I like the seedling.

Nancy, I am in the mood for the Rosies!! I like Rosie’s Cotton Ribbons and Rosy Sparkler.

Now, fingers crossed my Houzz curse is over!

    Rosy Affair

Retreat Beach (Brad, I seem to be collecting several this color!)

So many pretty ones Kate, glad you got these posted. My favorites are Rich in Mercy and Retreat Beach. I must be in a purple mood now.

    R's already?

Sherry, Red Suspenders and Ruby Star are great reds!

Maryl, Royal Banner is quite pretty. The sun makes a big difference but it is still nice!

Debra, I think Roman Cohort and the seedling from it are very pretty. I think I prefer the seedling!

Nancy, Rose Titan and Remedy are my favorites of yours.

Kate, Rich in Mercy is a nice purple. Rosy Affair is very pretty. As you figured, I really like Retreat Beach!

Red Viper, tall, large and bold rich color. Nice shows. Leans a bit sometimes.

Red Volunteer, great for shade, blooms well. Terrible in sun, fades badly.

Regal Finale, likes the sun. Late bloomer.

Rob Cobb, puts on daily shows, nice and tall and large.

Royal Occasion, small with rich black on it.

That's all for me. I got rid of several R's last year.

Kate: The color and form of Roy Doodle Allen is right up my alley. Such a pretty pastel orange that I had to look it up. I might have known that with a form like that it's a Buntyn - of Pink Aloha fame. I've tried several of their daylilies and alas none survive over winter with my pot method. You have other really nice Rs here, but that one stood out to me as it's the only shade of color that I might find room for this year.... Maryl

    ROYAL GIRLS!!!!!!

Sherry - I was tempted to take the Royal Cypher seedling, but I just had so many seedlings with better plant habits that I couldn't.

Kate - I'm with Brad on that Royal Girls photo. That clump looks fantastic! I like Retreat Beach too! The blooms on Red Venom have more of edge than I got. It looks like that one is short for you. Rich in Mercy looks so beautiful in your pic. I've thought about ordering that one in the past, but Laura said it has low bud count for her. How does it perform for you? Ruth Watkins Davidson has a lot of different looks, depending on the temperature. I do like Ed Davidson's intros and ordered two more for Spring. I'll have Ed's whole family growing in my garden. Ruth WD is named for his mother, Summer Kate is his daughter, and I'm getting the one named for his father, Rev. Ed Davidson, this year.

Brad - Thanks for the comment on the Roman Cohort seedling! Regal Finale does look pretty in your photo.

Debra, I really don’t know about bud count on Rich in Mercy. I have so many I really don’t notice the bud counts! I will try to remember to check on it this season and you are welcome to a division if it meets your criteria.

There are a lot to like.

I love Rosie Cotton's Ribbons, Rosie with a Ring, Rose F. Kennedy, Rainbow Maker, Red Suspenders, Ruby Storm and Reindeer Antlers.

    Here are my contributions:

ROYAL THRONE: Photo taken at Cottage Gardens

RUBY ROSE: Photo taken at Cottage Gardens. Beautiful color, but probably won't survive in my zone 5 garden. Brent Ross, the owner of Cottage Gardens, stated that many of the southern bred daylilies disappear in three to four years, as they don't thrive in the north.

Ron Valente: Photo taken at Cottage Gardens.

Now onto the plants that I grow:

RING NEBULA: Relatively new plant for me. It is tall and is well branched.

RED FRIDAY: Can be splotchy, but it is a popular parent.

ROSE F. KENNEDY: Good bloomer for me, but is slow to increase.

That is all for this letter.

David, you've got some real winners in my view!! Ruby Rose is gorgeous, as is Ron Valente. I like Ring Nebula too.

Ruby Storm is reliable here and quite vigorous.

Remembered Kisses, for some reason, has not liked the last two seasons.

So true about many of the southern-bred ones--it can take a few years before they show their tenderness.

It is ASHwood Rings of Saturn. So many good names are used up.

Royal Occasion is a rich color. And Roy Doddle Allen is alluring.

Look at all the kids of Rose F. Kennedy, and then note how many you ever see offered or flourishing in the North. She does a good job of passing on her slow-growth genes. (There appear to be some exceptions.)

Rosie with a Ring was divided and sulked last summer. I sulked too!

Roman Cohort does well here, but with division and heat, did not like last summer.

Requiem for a Dream was impressive in its first summer here, but is difficult (like many lavenders) to photograph. Large, sunfast (for a lavender) blooms opened early and flat.

Resist is not six inches and does not have the ideal candelabra branching that Curt prizes. But the color is striking.

Reckless Girls is not tall, but is blooming above the foliage and the color seems to like its new location (which was accidental).

Royal Girls was fairly dark in this photo. Earlier, it does have the deeper color of Kate's clump. It fades as the morning progresses.

Rainbow Maker looks a bit light in this photo, but one can see the airy placement of blooms. But count modest, and blooms often look larger in photos than they seem in person.

Rapture at Sea is a lovely lavender, but not especially vigorous.

Roses for Dallas is a nice flower, but not registered height here.

Ring Nebula is fairly new. About five inches.

Ruler of Nations opens well. Doesn't seem as vigorous as Karol's Every Knee Shall Bow, but I started with a single.

Redheaded Hussy is a very brilliant red (Davisson).

Rainbow Mesa (older Hanson) looked better than ever.

Royal Extravaganza was happy last year. In a previous year, it had some splotchy blooms. In general, it was a bad year for splotchies, but not for Royal. Large flower; a bit of a space hog.

    Rogue Wave is a Hanson.

I have kept Rose Masterpiece because of its early intense color. Unfortunately, it is in the garden that gets earwigs. One would hope that the coldest winter in over 30 years would do in some earwigs.

Rogue Primate (Hanson) is vigorous, sunfast, and intense.

Mantis, thanks for catching ASHWOOD RINGS OF SATURN error. It is now in the correct spot.

Mantis - Reckless Girls can make a beautiful clump. I brought that one with me, but failed to photograph it last season since it blooms later, and I was away house shopping then. Royal Girls does have gorgeous color. I'd like to add that one someday. Rainbow Maker had a couple of rainy years when I saw bud counts in the 20s, but most years the buds ranged from 12-16. Rogue Primate is a pretty red. How tall does it get for you?

    Debra

Mantis, Requiem for a Dream is quite beautiful. Great color and style. Roman Cohort is very nice too. Rose Masterpiece is also pretty.

    Brad

Rogue Primate does look like an intense red. I am also drawn to the lavenders Requiem for a Dream and Rapture at Sea. I seem to be going through a lavender phase!

Debra, Rogue Primate is about 30 inches tall. It is a big plant. If you get 15 buds on Rainbow M in Indiana, I will be surprised. Perhaps it gets better with age, but I noted that in 2019 you said that it had "very few buds."

    last modified: 9 months ago

Mantis - Rainbow Maker had very few buds grown in a pot (6-8), and 2019 may have been the year after it got hit so badly by grubs. Scapes varied wildly in bud count from year to year, depending on how badly grubs ate the roots. I do know 25 buds was the most I ever saw on a scape.

Thanks for the info on Rogue Primate!

I just realized I didn't post a photo of Royal Invitation, which is one of the best Emmerichs I grow. It's a great multiplier and rebloomer and was taller for me than registered. I didn't get a photo of it last year, but here are a couple from previous seasons. Sometimes it's toothy, and sometimes it's not. In cool temps it has mostly a white edge, and in high heat the edge is cream and gold.

    Royal Invitation

    Royal Invitation clump

I got some dynamite kids from it, which unfortunately got left behind. I'll have to duplicate the cross here.

Maryl- Being a dormant, Royal Invitation might work in your pot system. If you still want to try it, I could probably send you a double fan. It's one of the few registered ones where I brought the whole clump.
