Spring is making an appearance here

I know spring isn't here yet and we have many cold days ahead of us, but the signs are here.

The snowdrops are almost the first to make an appearance.

I love this patch of iris reticulata. The photo shows them more blue than purple. We have a couple more patches of a different variety as well.

Violas have shown up in our favorite garden center.

The daylily seedlings are up and doing well too.

Several of the daffodils are showing buds, but no flowers here yet. I did see some daffodils around town though. The hyacinths are coming up too. I noticed that the magnolias are about to bloom also. They often get frosted here. I hope that doesn't happen this year.

The iris sure pop up at you. Each dab of color in the early spring brings so much promise of things to come. Every year I try overwintering my pansies/violas in pots, but 99% of the time they fizzle out in late winter. I just lost my last two pots about a month ago. I keep saying never again, but come fall, I succumb to their happy little faces.....I need to find a rust free source for Pansy Faced Charmer daylily I guess. It's about as close as I'll get to success with the pansy face- (well hopefully)............Maryl

It's wonderful to see some Spring color! I was excited to see I have some tulips, daffodils and some other bulb things on the way. I don't expect blooms for another week or so.

Nice early color Nancy. Lots of happy seedlings too…..how many this season?

Debra, it will be interesting to see what spring things the previous owners had.

The only things emerging here are daylily and a volunteer bunch of snow drops from my neighbors garden. I am officially getting impatient.

Sherry, we planted about 1250 seeds this year, but our germination has not been good. Some crosses have barely any seedlings up and they have been planted for over a month. Maybe it was the dry summer that affected the seed quality. Some of the seeds are out of Heavenly New Frontiers which is a pentaploid. We have never worked with it before and so we wonder if it is a problem on the ploidy level.

The seedlings that germinated look very good. Early daffodils so far look smallish--I think last year's extreme drought is still taking a toll. Magnolias here are a ways off. Snowdrops are pretty much finished.

Some daffodils blooming here .Magnolia bright color buds are set to open. Fingers crossed no freezing temps coming. Tulips are well on their way in growth. Crocuses in bloom. Local nurseries have pansies for sale for the last couple of weeks.. I'm tempted but I have enough to take care of at this time. My vegatable garden needs work but garlic is up and growing great.

Magnolia soulangeana has opened now. It took a blow last night, with temps at 28, but flower damage was not severe, as the night was overcast till around 5 a.m. So not enough hours below freezing. Saturday night, Mother Nature will try again to floor us, with temps probably even colder. And then next week, she will give us more body blows around 30.
