Bathroom sink questions

Updating a bathroom and will have an undermount sink. It looks like most of them are rectangular in the stores. What would the optium opening measurement be?

Brand preferences? Porcelain or ceramic?

Will probably have a 1 inch filler at the left end of vanity to ensure drawer opening clearance up against door frame. The right end of the vanity is not against a wall, the toilet is next to it. Would it look silly to have the counter extend an extra inch past the vanity on the right end? This would keep the sink centered. Toilet midline is like 20 inches from the vanity.

I personally like cast iron sinks

I would not worry about the extra inch one side regarding centering. Usually there is Not an overhang on the wall side and there Is an overhang on the free end. You are essentially creating an "overhang" on the wall side by having the inch filler. You can essentially center the sink without adding extra.

I'm pretty sure my sinks are 17-18" ovals, and they feel average in size. I wouldn't want those little tiny Ikea sinks, but I see no reason to go larger than average.

What I dislike about them is that they're shallow. I grabbed this picture from Google -- mine are actually white (cultured marble -- not fantastic to look at, but it cleans up easily), and I have changed those sad faucets. The problem is that if you turn the water on with any force, it "bounces" off the shallow front and splashes you.

In our old house we had the cheapest sinks Lowes sells. They weren't undermount (and undermount is better), but they were great. They were maybe 1" smaller than these vintage sinks I have now, but they were deep. I think they were ceramic, and they cleaned up easily. Loved them.

As for width of the vanity, what really matters -- matters much more than having the sink centered -- is having drawer storage AT the sink.

A 1" overhang, as long as it's on all sides not touching a wall, is fine.

The best faucets are wall-mounted -- but few people use them for sinks. With a wall-mounted faucet, you can easily clean the vanity without "flossing" the faucets. Second-best is a wide-mounted set (usually 8" apart). Worst is a 4" mounted set with an escutheon plate -- it's the most to clean, and it's also the cheapest /most common faucet.

When we built in 2021 I used the Kohler Caxton sink in all the bathrooms. No issues and they work as advertised!

Any feedback on the drain of the Caxton being in the center versus the rear? Read that as a complaint that plumbing then ate up all of you r under cabinet storage area.

It is a nice looking sink.

It is not uncommon for the vanity top to extend 1" past the vanity on the non-wall side. My master bath has a 1" overhang on the toilet side of the vanity.

Honestly, no one would notice if the sink wasn't perfectly centered. My master has 18" drawers on one side and 12" drawers on the other. No one notices unless I point it out that the sink is off center by a full 6".

The position of the drain on the Caxton isn't an issue for me. All my vanities also have drawers, so the under sink storage isn't as important. Plenty of room for extra TP, cleaning supplies, extra tissues boxes, etc.
