Help!! Fireplace needs attention

Im looking for ideas on making this area ”work”. The condo was completely refurbished before we bought it. I dislike the cubbies on both sides of the fireplace. The mantel(s) are literally separated in to and the stonework does not cover behind them.

I would love to get ideas and suggestions.

Post pictures of all 4 walls and another of the entire FP wall. We need to know your design aesthetic.

There is nothing I would save on that wall except the firebox itself. Wayyyy too much fakey stacked stone, the mantles are ridiculous, and the varied niches are just odd. You can spend a bunch of time and money trying to make this work or tear it off and fix it once.
