Fahgettaboutit .......

last year
last modified: last year

Seems as if there is a lot of petty theft going on, the local social media and Grizzy's news are full of theft reports. I only use one of my bikes for errands where I have to leave it outside so I just sprung for the Kryptonite Fahgettaboutit lock, recommended by the NYT Wirecutter, to secure it at the store or wherever I am visiting. I should get it in a few days, and I think it will work for the short daytime excursions I use this bike for, and maybe a bit better than the present chain and lock. There is a new, better lock out, the Hiplok, but I'm not sure it would be worth the $300 cost.

I do think it is worthwhile to make some effort lock up one's bike, or vehicle or home depending of course where you live.

I haven't heard of an increase in thefts in my area but there could be.

    What's Grizzy's?

There has been both petty and major thefts around here for ages. Used to be that you could just lean a bike against a wall and it would be there when you got back. That ended long ago. My son wont ride his bike anywhere unless he an bring it inside. He does have an old bike that he locks outside.

There are periodic thefts from cars on my street. Burglars look for unlocked cars.

I wish things were not like this. Police sometimes find bikes abandoned in parks after the thief takes it for a joy ride.

The only thing I see mentioned fairly often are porch pirate thefts. I’ve seen lots of videos, and these thieves seem pretty casual with strolling up and taking packages. Security cameras don’t seem to be much of a deterrent. Some videos are grainy/blurry and others show faces clearly. I haven’t heard anything from our neighborhood. Most homes are set back from the street with delivered packages hidden from view. However, that might not matter with the thieves who follow delivery trucks around.

DD got her bike stolen from inside her garage. One gets complacent and leaves doors unlocked that's what happens. Pretty sad!

Our town is overrun with drug addicts who will steal anything not nailed down. Bikes are quickly spray painted or wrapped in black electrical tape, so are seldom recovered. you see the lowest of the low riding little kid’s bikes. Nearly every day you can read of car prowls where people lose purses, wallets or computers they’ve left in their cars. I hate blaming victims, but no way should anyone leave anything in cars.

I feel pretty safe because I am at the end of a 2 mile long dead end road that is mostly down hill to get here. These guys don’t have cars and are too lazy ir compromised to peddle up it to get away.

In addition to locking my garage, I lock my bikes inside the garage. I have on occasion forgotten to close the garage door when I went to a store, but nothing was ever stolen, and my bikes were safe anyway.

Just remembering we once had a dolly disappear from our garage. The garage door was open, but it faces the backyard and can’t be seen from the street. Our house is set back from the street, so someone had to walk all the way back, climb over an electronic gate and around into the garage...for a dolly? It seemed odd but the garage is always closed/locked now.

Lars I too lock my bikes inside.

I had a friend who would lock his bike on the street, but he always used two locks. His theory was that if bike thieves were looking for something to steal, they would choose a bike where they only had to break one lock.

Bikes have been a major theft item in my neck of the woods since I was a child. Lots of theft from open garages, etc. I've always closed the garage door even if I was out mowing and had moved onto the back yard. Seems smart to have a bike lock even for short trips. Better than losing an expensive bike to a bunch of thieves. I haven't really looked into the risks of thieves stealing bikes locked with less-capable locks, but I imagine it's a real problem!

Grizzy is well known all over Texas. I've noticed that some smaller Texas town law enforcement are starting to use her 'Come on Down' format to catch thieves and others.

I guess one of the best things about living in a gated community is that we have no theft…..we senior citizens are a law-abiding lot 😎
