NYT Ads..........

last year

I know, they have to sell advertising. I don't mind the usual ads for clothes or shoes or jewels. But many of us start reading the NYT in the morning prior to our first cup of coffee. They should take that into account.

    ☕️ Try this cup.

Let the spider outside if it’s native.

Better than a rat or cockroach, I suppose.

Websites like the NY Times and most others do not on their own sell and then include ad spots on their own website.

There are a number of companies - Google I believe was the first and remains a major player - that procure the customer advertising business and then deliver the ads to website sponsors who want to host the placement. The website host gets a portion of the payment from the advertiser in return for providing the ad spot. Google in particular is effective (from the advertisers' perspective) because it places context sensitive and user-responsive ads that its info suggest would be of interest to the particular user.

If in the same browser you look at Hawaiian hotels and car rentals and then go to the NYT Times, you're likely to see ads for sunblock products and Travelocity. If you're connecting from Montana in January, you're unlikely to see an ad for swimsuits or electric bikes.

You connected from Texas, you saw an ad for spiders.

If you go to Home Depot's site and then go somewhere else, you're likely to see ads for hand-tools or other items to be found in a Home Depot type store.

During the network evening news which is at 5:30 here, the ads are directed at seniors' issues and maybe of the ads mention various digestive troubles. Um, I'm making or eating dinner. Thanks but no thanks. We watch Rick Steves or NHK News instead.

Definitely. I'm only objecting to the timing. Issues should occur AFTER my first cup of coffee.

Websites for commercial enterprises have ads, just like commercial TV stations have commercials.

If you don't want to see an ad before coffee, don't access a webpage or a TV station. .

@lucillle, you would think that the advertisers would know that anyone freaked out by a spider infestation is going to skip over that ad asap because of the graphic. It does not entice interest in looking further for me, for sure.

I'm disgusted by one of our local-ish news organizations that covers some happenings in my town (much better than the local paper), that has filler stories at the bottom of the page with the most gruesome headlines. Like the old National Enquirer headlines (maybe they still have those?) of unbelievable things. They don't appear to be local stories, they are simply sensationalistic click bait. I don't read the stories but you can't avoid seeing the headlines when you are perusing their homepage looking for local news that you might be interested in.

Sensational journalism. Yellow journalism. Tabloid journalism.

Different terms for the same thing. People with nosy natures and voyeuristic/escapist inclinations love such stuff. It draws audiences. It sells

Have you watched any of the morning shows lately. Or Dr. Phil when he was on. Dr. Oz? Or any of the other daytime shows for that matter.

It shouldn't be news to you or anyone else that such stuff is around. It's not high brow. Don't wonder who goes for it, it's most people.

    Sorry, then I misunderstood.

Why would something you know and expect disgust you?

More of what you probably know and understand - Craigslist and internet media effectively destroyed the newspaper business. It will never recover, and we all lose because of that. The small morsels that remain remain have limited revenue sources to turn to for support and where once even small newspapers had standards about what kind of ads they would and wouldn't accept, today they can't afford to turn away any potential advertiser waving a check.

Haha, it that a rhetorical question? Every day things i know and expect still disgust me.

  • last year

    Really? That's too bad.

  • last year

I agree, but I keep coming back here, knowing it's going to happen.

This is like the "my elbow hurts when I move it". Alter you pattern for a different outcome.

An example, I'm trying to converse with you and hope your name-calling is kept in check. So far, so good. I'm too positive for a boring and predictable pattern to disgust me.

Olychick, I'm a total rubbernecker when it comes to reading news of murders. What gets me is when I read a story on my phone and it is followed by suggestions of other stories, with the line, "You may also like this.." No, I didn't like what happened.

Have an 3 x 5 in index card or a post-it handy to cover up such things. The flickering of sidebar videos annoys me when reading news or site on my tablet. If I use the reader view, I don’t always seeimages that are part of an article.

❓Do people actually have ”Spider Infestations?”

    Who? Where?

Sometimes in April or May, I can get small picnic ants. My fault. Those ants are evolves geniuses at picking up any scent of food, sugar, fat. They lay down at trail for others and the chemical (pheromone) trail can persist for at least a year. I know from experience. Picnic ants are harmless and fascinating. To disuade them, clean, wipe up, be a neatnik.

Oh, BTW, cat owners may have had this experience: when I had a cat or two, they loved watching the ants, AND, they liked to eat them. There is something in the ant that is like dope for them. Too many (eaten) picnic ants, and the cat would get wired and aggressive.

    Anyone?
