Design help for guest bedroom

We are trying to design a guest bedroom and the only place a bed fits is in a still-not-ideal area that has a drop down ceiling on the left side that will lead to a small half bath, and an electrical box that protrudes about 5 inches. The green tape outlines where we would like the bed to go so we have some symmetry with the box above and walking space on either side of the bed, though we understand pushing the bed to the window side would likely work best. Our guests are parents so we don’t want them to have to climb all the way over. Any ideas for disguising or making the all look better? One idea we had was building shelves on side of the electrical box but might still look strange if the bed is off center? Open to ideas, napkin drawings, anything!

Draw the room, with every dimension, the walls, window, passage to half bath, how the circuit box protrudes, etc. Every foot and inch

Upload as a jpeg below in a COMMENT box.....AND....WHAT size bed, please? Queen.King, etc.

This is truly the only wall the end can go on because of other plans for the room, doors, etc. It is a queen size bed and the electrical box protrudes 5 inches. The headboard of the bed protrudes 4 inches. The bathroom will be on the left side with entry under the dropdown ceiling (you can see the studs where the bathroom wall will go to the left of the end. Here’s another picture for reference. The bed cannot go on the other visible walls / corner and any help how to disguise or make the wall look better above where the bed will go is much appreciated!

I am very glad not to be the guest:)?

What other plans for the rest?

Use a bed with a tall upholstered headboard in FRONT of the darn panel, hang art on the panel door with mounting tape, or 3M hook. Pray you don't need to access it at two am.

It's hard to give better advice, there isn't full context in your question. A drawing , the bath..etc.

You could hang a curtain in front of the electrical panel box (From floor to ceiling) that is the width of the bed. Put it on a rod that wraps on the ends. You could also have a headboard (so the pillows don't fall off), but it should not be tall enough to interfere with opening the panel. Or make the box around the panel larger to change the look of the box to a floor to ceiling bump-out that is as wide as the bed. That would look more intentional.

A floor plan info as to size of bed to begin to get help and if you begin by telling us what is written in stone we are pretty much done already . The 2 scale plan tells us,many things we need to see where the windows are the doors and the bathroom too so done on graph paper show us all that and every measuremtn clearly marked in jpeg format in a comment . If there are things planned list them. I see a door to the outside is that a must ? Waht are the other plans for the room if this is aguest room?

Me? Unless I am staying over a single night to baby sit, or something?

I'm at the Marriott Courtyard up the road.!

I wouldn't sleep a wink in that space, door to the back yard at the foot of my bed.....let alone with a partner in the squeeze spot.: )

I would love to see a floorplan. From the pictures, it looks like the bed could go in two other places.

Assuming this is the only place for the bed, hang a luxurious curtain on the panel wall and place the bed in front of the curtain. It will be cozy and warm.

Maybe a canopy bed with curtains at the back and also at the two end corners. Old fashioned, yes. But it would help cozy up a very busy room for sleeping.

Thank you all to those that have provided helpful feedback so far! I will see if I can get to a floor plan today but like I said earlier, unfortunately this is the only wall the bed can go so looking for design / decorating ideas as opposed to layout. But will try to get to it!

With more construction (carpentry/electric/drywall/painting) you can make anything look good. I’d suggest an outlet on the side returns of the niches for phone charging.

    ^^^!!!

    Actually, a great idea you could do with ready made panels, use 3 x the width of the space ( 10' ? ) = 120" x 3 = 360" divided by 54"

Buy 3 PAIR of 54 = 6 panels close enough.

Traverse rod, and just hang with drapery rods to a fixed position. Easy to access the panel. Put easy mover pads under the FEET of that bed.

Good looks!! problem solved, and thank you Aunt Thelma....( I'm still not sleeping there at that door )lol

And with that suggestion ^^^the entrance to the bathroom would obviously need to shift to accommodate the bump outs…

My parents have a choice of two rooms in my house one with a queen and the other with 2 twins (adjustable beds). They choose to sleep on the twin beds. My mother says she likes the break from having my father snore right next to her head! lol

Maybe twin beds would give you more options?

I don’t understand how the panel opens with the drapery rod? The panel goes to the ceiling. Chispa brings up a good point about beds and that goes back to needing the floor plan.

She's not giving the floor plan. The panel DOESN'T open until you need it too!

It's a simple traverse rod concept. with drapery pins , not a rod and rings.

    Like.......magic : )

A Bed? Personally aside from I 'd be at the Marriott, she is stuck on her plan we can't see, but I'd have a really good pull out sofa, under the window or in front of the curtain....

    We all remain clueless...: )

Well since the panel cover goes to the ceiling and would not work with the rod concept you could remove the panel cover entirely if you do the drapery idea. I don’t know how it would look at the left side (where it meets the drop down)- maybe build a mini wall to hide the gap? 🤷‍♀️ also using a flame retardant fabric for the drapery panels would be wise.

Why.......bother to remove the cover? When its hidden? The cover simply opens, You had a little "return rod" at the left side gap........

The box isn't catching fire..........and the exit door is at the foot of the bed. To fresh air,.

Jan look at the photo she posted of the door open. It goes to the ceiling. I can’t make myself any more clear.

Moving along…I found a few photos of what my quick sketch was describing. Small reading sconces switched independently on each side of the bed would be very nice!

But, the ledge idea might not work if that cord has to stay - what is that exactly?

  • last month

Thinkdesignlive I so appreciate you taking the time to sketch out your idea! This is helpful. The cord is for an Internet box that was attached to the box built around the electrical panel, and it needed an outlet, but we plan to move it or put it inside the box around the panel in the renovation.

The niche idea is nice too
