Met Gala + random

last year

1) In general, I think the Met Gala is an exercise in excess, but sometimes I like to look at the thematic clothing. I was completely underwhelmed this year. Anna Wintour's was nice.

2) I ran into my old trainer from years ago, who now lives in the burbs taking care of his 91 yo mother, but still has clients in various gyms in the city, and he can belong to multiple because he over 65 and on Medicare and so forth. Our old gym was really a center for the neighborhood, and a relatively congenial place (also shoehorned into a number of old buildings connected by random staircases spread out over 7 levels, which is why ended up being torn down).

Anyway many people at this gym wear headphones and pay absolutely no attention to anyone else and sometime even seem offended if you ask a question like how many more sets they have on a machine. And some of them will sit on a machine forever and look at their phones.

My trainer said he asks "How many more Texts do you have on this machine?". Pretty apropos.

    1) Agree with your comment about Anna W. I really didn’t see anything else that excited me.

    2) Love your trainer’s way of thinking. 🤣

The long men’s skirt/kilt was my favorite look.

You mean Paul Tazewell? He was wearing Thom Browne, who has made men's kilts and skirts for years.

Yes, he looked sensational. Thom Browne stole the show - Janelle Monae's look was great too. While a bit cheesy, Demi's dress was gorgeous.

I also LOVED Andree 3000's piano.

I paged through and then looked up the theme because nothing was coming through for me. "...importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, and will be arranged by 12 characteristics of Black dandyism. "Tailored for you " fit after the fact. I am used to see a theme that is more suited to theatrics I suppose. The red carpet looked more like haute couture vs costumes like is often does. The designers must have the most fun prepping for these galas. They can really set caution to the wind and focus on creativity.

I didn't see as much of it as I have in the past, but the few I saw seemed not at all spectacular, or interesting. It seems more and more like those there may be in a joke but I'm definitely missing it.

This year was kind of a snooze and a yawn. The fancier the women’s suits the more the look was Mary Poppins bridal— esp with those long trains.

In re the gym. Maybe try to find an Alloy Personal Training near you. There is one in Moorestown, but that would not be ideal for you I would guess. They do small group training for people over 40. I have never had more than six in a group. I think it is a wonderful program. Mostly strength/endurance training. Their trainers are very qualified (two miniscus tears in my knee in Februalry. MRI in March. Then doc prescribed PT. Never got around to calling them, but kept up with Alloy after a month when the pain was the worst. My trainer modified some things for me and I am much much better. The tears seem to be healing-yay). I always look forward to my sessions-leaving n 10 minutes for one.

I think part of it was that there was a lot of red and black or maroon and black and this is a combination that I really do not like at all.

I like black a lot. Red is a difficult color and seems to work best on it's own as the main color.

My notice to men everywhere (or possibly the women who outfit them)

There Is No Such Thing As A Man's Red Dress Shirt.

I do not have a problem with men's red dress shirts - you can buy them at Macy's. That said, I do not have or want one, although I've worn pink and magenta ones. I think any pastel color is fine, although I realize red is not pastel. Magenta is considered a masculine color in Mexico, but then it is not exactly red.

I do not discriminate by color or tell anyone that a particular color is not acceptable. I went to a black tie party at the Waldorf Astoria in NY wearing a red bow tie and red cummerbund with my tuxedo. I also used to make my own bow ties and cummerbunds, but the red I bought in Los Angeles at the Westside Pavillion.

Pink dress shirts a classic. Red accessories are fine. There are probably ways to wear a red dress shirt with the right kind or suit or jacket. The problem is I have only seen one worn with a black suit which I think looks cheesy, or a brown suit which I don't get at all.

I would rather see a red suit with a black shirt. Red blazers or red pants are fine, red sports shirts, fine.

I just don't think this is a good look.

I am only paying $10 a month for my membership and soon enough it should be free, so for me it's worth putting up with a less congenial environment on occasion.
