Trees Shrubs Landscape Design

help? replacing big shrub

Don't judge.. crazy long lawn and shrubs due to a ton of rain! My 30 year old Lilac shrub is dead.. it's got viburnums on each side. What can I plant here that would look nice? Zone 5. Faces northwest.. maybe a small tree? This is so not my specialty!! Thanks for any ideas!

If you can drip water consistently a hardy hibiscus like Valentine's Crush. Hibiscus 'Valentine's Crush' CPBRAF PP35170 | Walters Gardens, Inc.

You don't want a small tree, you want a shrub. Maybe a ninebark? Lilacs typically come back from the roots. I'd cut it to the ground and not replant until the fall, when you know if it's really dead.
