Fern IDs

mad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)

I have these volunteer ferns that have, umm, volunteered to live in my garden. I wouldn't mind knowing what they are.

This is the first one.

and here is the second.

yes, it is growing in a blue trug that was left outside over the winter.

They both appear to be Onoclea sensibilis - Sensitive fern.

Thanks, Peren.all. I don't know ferns, and could only guess they are native. They are also illiterate, since they often come up in sunny, dry places.

Good to have a name for this fern which appeared in my yard a few years back!

If these are new to your yard, keep an eye on them. They are aggressive in my yard and crowd my astilbe etc.

You are most welcome and yes they are native. In moist soil with part shade they are much larger than in sun.

Design Fan happy to have IDed it for both of you. They are aggressive but if you cut off the fertile fronds it really keeps them under control.
