(floof) Products that fall flat?

A little more than a year ago, I was at Costco and saw these Swedish Cleaning Cloths.

Seemed like a good idea. They were pretty patterns, small napkin sized, and were supposed to replace paper towels (reusable and washable). At first, I thought they were fine. However, they haven't washed well at all . I just don't get it. I'm not really sure what the deal was is with them.

Costco had them for several months, but haven't seen them in a long while.

And you?

Ditto on Sprayway. The manufacturer of our shower doors recommended it. I buy the spray bottle instead of the aerosol, just because I feel that I have more control over it.

Salonva, yes the eyeliner. The tip has broken off a couple times and it dries out if you firget to put the cap on.

Tom's under arm deodorant does not work at all for me. I became allergic to my deodorant that I had used most of my adult life - it caused severe itching every time I used it for the last couple of years. I went without until a friend told me about Tom's deodorant that doesn't have aluminum or other harsh chemicals in it. Last week I bought Tom's unscented under arm stick (on sale for only $7 and change - that's a lot of money for deodorant!) and after using it every day for a week I think that my body odor is worse than when I would use straight witch hazel out of the bottle to apply to my arm pits after a shower.

Does anyone know of a more natural deodorant without harsh chemicals that actually works??

So far, all products that claim to control frizz. Not. One. Works.

If anyone has found one, please share!

Yes to the frizz. At least the two products have done wonders for me. My hair is fine but I have a lot of it. With it becoming increasingly gray, if I was outside in wind I was definitely frizzed and my lifelong Redken products were failing me. Jaw length bob right now.

About a teaspoon of Virtue Correct Un-Frizz Cream, leave in. I had never used a leave in conditioner before this one.

For styling, I add another approx teaspoon of Bed Head Control Freak (frizz control and straightener serum - it's a gel) before blow drying.

The combination has solved my problem. The Virtue line is not inexpensive however.

Thanks for the E-Cloth suggestion. Going to order some.

I buy these for countertop and appliance cleaning, windows, shower glass, mirrors, cabinet and door hardware, and more. I have open top containers labeled with clean, dirty, bathroom, windows, and mirrors. A small amount of Tide powder in warm water gets them clean. First heard of them from GoCleanCo (Canadian cleaning expert). I have ordered on Amazon, but Costco has sometimes.

I have a shower door cleaner (spray) that I like, but will check out Sprayway when it's empty.

I have fine hair and found Garnier Fructis Sleek & Stay (not the same as GF’s Sleek & Shine product) works best for my hair in Georgia’s heat and humid weather. I apply according to the directions, blow dry and then flat iron. Even works on my golf days when my head gets sweaty 😁

Yes Eld I smooth the Virtue through shampooed hair with my hands and then before turning on my blow dryer I add the Bed Head. I do find it building up on my blow dry and styling brushes and they need more frequent washing than I was used to but I don't find it building up on my hair - no idea why but my hair appears clean. With the right cut and I've been with stylist a long time because she gets the right cut - I blow dry every two or sometimes three days now that I'm sleeping on silk pillowcases (Blissy).

I do not go out with hair that looks slept on or not its best, I'm particular about my hair 😊

Editing to add: We are coastal but rarely warm and humid /air- on the cool side often and i can feel 'ocean' in wind/air. I don't know if my routine would work in Georgia's warmer humidity.

Salovna, I use the dishcloths for all counter cleaning/wiping, rinse it and hang it on my sink caddy. There are cheapie versions that do not hold up well; I always use the FEBU brand.

I dont like those little cloths. They are too small for good swabbing like you would get with a larger dishcloth.

I recently found out about cleaning vinegar and started buying that . I never believed all the claims that vinegar does this or that. But this cleaning vinegar is strong stuff! I buy the 30% and it has to be diluted. I put it in a spray bottle after diluting and it works really well for sinks and for stainless steel appliances and windows! I dilute it but make it stronger than is recommended. Culinary vinegar is not capable of doing what this stuff does.

Not a fail - but I use the 30% concentrated vinegar to kill weeds - works well, especially on a sunny day. Tenacious weeds may need a second application.

eld, about 6-8 months ago I took the hair quiz on Live Love Locks. (<-- Link) He did not have his own product line at that time, and still does not push it. I switched to my suggested products, and have watched a ton of his YT videos. He basically says frizz products do not work. The only products he recommends (and not ALL brands of these products) are shampoo, conditioner, leave in heat protector and hair oil. Oh, and a dry shampoo. My hair was not unhealthy before, but it's even better now. I also learned I was not washing my hair completely correct, and go five days between washing (unless I get sweaty/dirty sooner).

OMG, wow. I still wash my hair every day. I try to let it air dry at least every other day. Doesn't the color look different after not washing it 5 days. For blondes it would I think.

There’s a lot of ”memory foam” that falls flat ;)

    salonva thanked petalique

Hair is so tricky too, because there is huge variability from one person to the next. How anyone's hair will react to styling product is often related to whether your hair is high porosity or low porosity, as one good example. What works for one person (styling routine, styling products, shampoo/conditioner, etc.) is not likely to produce the exact same results for someone else.

You'd think, "it's just hair, how complicated can it be?" But there's just so much individual variation to it.

I usually wash my hair once per week. I have never had oily hair. It's so liberating! I used to wash it every day when it was short because I had to wet it to be able to style it. With longer hair, that's not necessary. And I cannot let my hair air dry. I look ridiculous. Have to blow dry and flat iron. Doing that every day would not be good.

And while not related to products that fall flat, but related to hair -- I started Nutrofol. I'm about 3.5 months in and the decrease in shedding is dramatic. I haven't yet noticed new growth but I've read/heard that takes about 6 months. My stylist noticed the difference in my hair too.

I usually wash my hair every other day or every 2 days. I dont have straight or curly hair. It’s thick and slightly wavy. Its also very healthy.. There is no way i’m going longer without washing my hair. Even if it looked ok, I would not like the feel. I spend alot of time outside and we are very warm now, not to mention exercising, so yes, I sweat.

I used to be the same HU...9642. My hair just doesn't feel dirty anymore. Often doesn't feel or look dirty at a week, but I wash it anyway. And I discovered dry shampoo which helps if I do get sweaty.

Note, when on vacay and on the beach I wash it almost every day (and I'm always annoyed that I have to).

Exactly! I had healthy hair before, but it's even better now.

Mtn, I used to wash mine every other day, and wet daily so that I could style it. I don't wake up with a style that can leave the house very often. :-/ Now, if I need to spurce it up a bit, I just use a spray bottle and dampen a little, use the leave in conditioning spray (which I forgot to put in my list above, so I will edit) and a little leave in heat protector gel on the ends.

Washing my brunette hair more often changes its color.

jsk, I have never had oily hair either.

My stylist is also one of my BFFs. She has a couple of clients that tend to come in with dirty scalps, and I am not one of them. If I'm not out walking in this heat or working in the yard, it takes days for my hair to get dirty, and it's only at the back. But I don't let it get dirty. I am currently on Week 3 of 8 where I am limited due to recent surgery. Walking in the house has become my new thing, but I did go the an antique store yesterday and upped my daily steps. LOL

I stopped wearing deodorant years ago, and no, I do not smell. I have trusted sources that have reassured me of this. :-) On most days, I wear nothing. On days when it's warm or when I know I'm going to need some protection, I use a few drops of tea tree oil on a cotton pad of witch hazel, and it works.

One product that is always a fail for me is makeup primer. I've always liked the idea of it, but I've tried several brands. Something always goes sideways about them.

My skin is getting a bit crepey, and I fell for a social media ad for a skin oil. Turns out, it's nothing special. I love body oils, and my skin really takes to them. But my trusty shower oil, rosehip oil, and coconut oil all work just fine.

@bbstx, we've always used good ol' Jergen's bar soap, but we can't find it anymore! Last batch on the Big A wound up costing about $10 per bar. Yikes. DH has super sensitive skin so we don't change brands. Now we are using Dove unscented which seems to also work OK for him.

gsciencechick, we also miss the Jergen's bar soap! UGH! Strangely enough, I can use Dial bar soap without causing an allergic reaction. I usually buy one of the white bars rather than the old original orange one. Another bar soap that I can use is the Pears glycerine soap. Bought these soaps at Dollar Tree just to try out so I didn't have to buy a large quantity.

My bet is the Costco "Swedish cloths" weren't. Mine do everything you said yours didn't. I got a cheap set and was I ever disappointed! Best dish cloths ever. I love how they don't leave any liquid after I wipe the cupboard. But I get caught up in the graphics. They are so dang cute!

    salonva thanked arcy_gw

arcy, do you use the Swedish cloths dry or do you have to wet them? Remember the Sham Wow cloth? I tried those but they didn't seem to suck up the water unless they were wet.

    salonva thanked arkansas girl

I would say both. I have attempted to soak up larger spills like one would use paper towel with dry cloths but once used a lot they get pretty stiff and that makes them unsatisfying to use. But if I think about it generally I would dampen them before using. I am sort of a fanatic about my wipe up cloths being freshly moist with warm to hot water. Drives DH nuts when I rewet a cloth he already rinsed and set aside for me as he washes dishes and I am wiping down counter tops!! This morning it dawned on me I have no surfaces that show streaks -one of the negative comments about the Swedish cloths, so I don't know about this issue.

But I swung back to this thread, thinking about the Caraway comment. My DIL LOVES this product. She had their baking sheets on her Christmas list and has used them and loves loves loves them. We then surprised her with a round cake pan for her bday. She's a pretty discriminating cook when talking non stick pan coatings and cooking. She is trying to talk my son into going whole hog and getting an her kitchen stocked with their products.

I recently switched to Tom’s and it is much less effective than it’s chemical laden competitors. I live in S FL and have found that reapplying during the day helps. I am trying to make it work and embrace my own scent but that can only go so far. (for me)

I converted to Swedish wash cloths about a year ago. My DIL , also a germaphobe like me, kept giving me the really decorative ones and so I had to try them. What convinced me is that if you make sure not to have any soap residue in the them , wring it our really well, and wipe the counter, there will be no streaks. If they streak, you are using them too wet, or there is a soap residue in them. I was never one to use paper towels to wipe up spills. I just used a kitchen wash cloth. I like that the swedish wash cloths dry really quickly, so no chance to grow germs like in sponges that stay wet so long.

Ally De- me too me too. I haven't been on the subway in summer in probably 43 years.... but have always had a sharp sense of smell which is not necessarily a blessing. I can recall when I was pregnant with DD1 that my sense of smell was heightened . When I was on the subway then, I could barely manage to contain myself from the ahem aromas.

Also, I do sweat quite a bit, and thankfully maybe 15 years ago discovered Secret Clinical deoderant which works beautifully for me. I still sweat like a pig, especially with zumba or walking in the heat, but I smell like baby powder. Even when I take a whiff of my clothing, they smell fresh.

Re the Swedish cloths - I realize I still have the box with probably 4 more. I only use them with water. They are not bad, but I don't get what the appeal is... still.

DDIL uses Swedish cloths but when I asked her about them she simply remarked that they were pretty useless. But I don't know which brand she had.

We just had a deodorant conversation in the locker room last week after Aqua boot camp and several women said they'd stopped wearing it unless it was a hot, humid day or they were working outside. Two retired nurses who were non-deod wearing said they noticed that as they got older they needed it less and maybe it was somewhat related to hormones.

Then the discussion evolved into who remembered Katy Winters and Ice Blue Secret from the 1960's. Most of the conversations in the locker room veer wildly off-course.

I've been using Each & Every deodorant for a couple of years. Not sure if totally natural, but it is aluminum free. I have no idea how I found this brand. It works really well for me. I do not stink even after a sweaty workout. I use unscented but they have many scents for those that prefer.

    Link: Each And Every Unscented

I notice that the package is completely different than the one I currently have. Hoping they haven't changed the actual product. I am almost out and will reorder and keep my fingers crossed.

I recently decided to try new ones:

Donna Karan Cashmere Mist. Influencers push this one. Nope, didn't work. I was surprised how stinky I was!

Necessaire Deodorant. I like some of their other products so gave it a try. Not great. Better than Donna Karan but not nearly as good as Each & Every.

DH and DS both use Toms of Maine and like it a lot. I tried it and also did not work for me. I do like their toothpaste a lot.

My DH used to use Tom's, but he only liked one scent. We both use Native now -- a lot of different scents for different seasons or moods (some include watermelon, grapefruit and peach nectar in spring and summer, peppermint stick and sugar cookie in the winter. It is pricey, but it lasts a long time. I like the scents in their body wash too but I didn't like the way it rinsed.

Vanicream makes an aluminum-free gel deodorant that is also free of many other harsh chemicals and is fragrance-free. I have used their clinical strength stick deodorant for a number of years, and it does contain aluminum zirconium, but i really like it. You can buy either on A-zon. Just after Covid the company had an issue with obtaining one of their key ingredients. They finally got this resolved and resumed production several months later much to my relief. It is still made in Canada as far as I know.

edited to add: Vanicream also makes a bar soap for sensitive skin. Those who are looking for something to replace discontinued items soaps might look at it. I have not tried it as i am happy with the Native shower gels.

One product that was a fail for me was that highly-touted ’Pink Stuff’. I never saw the advantage.

I also didn’t care for Sprayway glass cleaner, although it was nice not having a spray that ran down the glass. I did use it on our outdoor windows and on my car windows and it was ok, but I always had streaks.

I’ve been going through chemo for 1 1/12 years and my hair has grown in. i now have white curly hair as opposed to my original going grey niether straight or wavy. i wear it natural as i can’t use a blow dryer or other devices . I need a recommendation for a jell type product

that will tame it bit .. The texture has changed and is not as soft. The bangs and crown are pretty curly and need some frizz control. BTW i love sprayway too!

Cran, my hair was fuzzy curly after chemo for the first few cuts. I had wavy hair before but what came back in initially was frizzy curly, think Mama on Carol Burnett! After it had grown out and all been cut off on time, it calmed down. Now I get humid curly which I did before. There's hope for the original texture to return.

Oly, I never tried it (the Bio-Clean) but I do remember this being raved about on here several years ago. In our remodeled bathroom, so far diligently squeegy-ing the glass seems to be working but this is a good reminder.

I have to say, totally unrelated to product failure, that reading these posts really highlights to me just how blessed and fortunate we are to live in this day and age . Despite so many of the horrible warts and all, how lucky are we to discuss this very topic? And I feel that even more when reading about various medical challenges which I know are substantial , but here we are prevailing.
