More Blooms Starting

I've had more daylilies beginning to bloom yesterday and today, but either the rain or bugs are making many of them splotchy. I'm not familiar with the bugs I'm finding in the blooms. They aren't thrips or earwigs. They are round little black bugs with the shape like a ladybug on about one fourth that size. Does anyone know what they are?

Grandma's Smile X Bubblegum Delicious is one of my few seedlings blooming that looks presentable. It came through the winter quite well for an evergreen planted in late September, and it even added a fan. It has instant rebloom coming on a couple of fans.

Core Values X Bowtie Affair didn't have any splotches, but it was missing the eye patterns it showed on early blooms in Nashville. Now that we have night temps in the 70s, I don't guess it will have any patterns. Blooms are 7 inches, where they were 6-6.5 in Nashville. It came through the winter well, but did not show a fan increase.

Applique has gorgeous color here, but the scapes are really short, ranging from 8-25 inches. I hope it will be taller next year.

Brown's Ferry Debutante has lighter color and rounder form with the hotter temps.

All things considered with your move and late plantings I think your plants and blooms look really good. Yoga Man is looking better. Brown’s Ferry Debutante is a nice pink and Applique does have good color.Yuck on the bug! We can never get completely away from some type of critter, can we?!!

Your blooms look perfect given the climate change(warm to cooler) they went through. Applique does look very striking and deep color. Brown's Ferry Debutante is such a pretty pink color. Your seedlings are always a treat to see.

Don't know the bug but if you get a pic then google image to see what results you get. Perhaps likely something in the Asian Beetle family?

Julia - The bugs are so small they're hard to photograph. I would think they are some type of beetle.

Kate - No, we can't get away from the critters. Squirrels have been digging holes in the soil of my potted daylilies and turning over a few pots every day.

I agree with Kate, your blooms look great despite the move. If that tiny bug is what i see here…..nothing to worry about. I wonder if Nan gets much pattern on her daylilies, I dont add patterned blooms here…has been a disappoinment in the past.

OOH! Those bugs you talk about sound a lot like some I had a couple of years ago. I hadn't seen them before, but they ate the heck out of my Zinnia seedlings. The bugs were small. Smaller then a Ladybug but bigger then the head of a pin. They were black without markings. I researched them but don't remember what I discovered. Haven't seen them since.....I think you may have told me, but did you take that Pink Aloha seedling with you to Indiana? I do like your pink seedling and with your milder summer climate maybe colors will hold better. Of course I like the Mauve Pink Brown's Ferry Debutante. He does do pinks well. I just wish I had better luck with his daylilies overwintering..............Maryl

Maryl - I took all three of my Pink Aloha seedlings with me, the one dormant that you always liked and two evergreens.
