Picture of the entire room? What about the cabinet to the left? Are there more cabinets? Is the kitchen close by and same cabinets? Open concept? Context is key.

There is no cabinet on the other side. The room is long and narrow and on a seperate floor than the kitchen. plan to keep the honey oak fireplace surround and doors in honey oak. . Flooring, baseboards, walls , and furniture

will be changed. plan to keep the off white walls.

I would remove it. Then it will be more like the right side of the fireplace. You could put some nice floating shelves in there to hold some items or just hang some artwork.

If that is not an option, then paint it out the same as the wall. The oak for the mantle is nice but do not feel obligated to add it in other areas. That is not necessary- it can stand alone.
