book matching marble

Hi! I just got informed by my fabricator he can’t book match my counters/backsplash with ledge (even though the stone is bookmatched slabs) he told me he will “book match the whole kitchen” and sent me a drawing but my husband and I can’t understand it. Can anyone help me? I have images of the stone with his template then this sketch

You don't have enough slabs to do what you think it should look like.

He "bookmatched" your counters at the sink and range, and will have the backsplash pattern flow in a similar direction.

I would prefer the perimeter counters to all flow in one direction.

If you can't understand what the fabricator is sending you, then you need to go to his shop and have him explain it to you. Do you have any photos to show what you want?

Thank you for the comment! I did go to stand in front of the stone with him and it didn’t help, he spooked me when he didn’t notice the slabs are bookmatched

Yes, your fabricator needs to show you exactly what it will look like when looking down at the counters where he flips the direction at the sink and the range.

Here is the top longer section book matched to give you an idea on the backsplash above sink or range.

I am not a fan of the Rorschach test happening in the kitchen. Is that a pig face in the middle? Maybe a lion or a panda?🤭

It might be a blessing if he doesnt book match. I really don’t understand why people do it. To me it looks bizarre and unnatural. And if that is real stone that you are using - even more of a question mark in my head as to why you are trying to bookmatch.

He can see that your slabs are book matched, but he knows you don't have enough material, which is why he laid it out the way he did.

You only have a pic of one slab with a tape-out on it. Do you have a pic of the bookmatched slab? Does it have tape-outs on it too?

I wouldn't say these are the best example of book-matched slabs I have seen. Usually you have a more unique pattern/design that you want to highlight. These are so busy, that I don't think it really matters.

This is how people tend to use book-matched slabs ...

I really dislike when slabs are book matched - and it creates a face! I would never be able to "unsee" that.

As chispa has shown you in the above comment, there needs to be a good result when the slabs are book matched = the movement + colors of the stone slabs creates a beautiful pattern.

While I love calacatta marble, these slabs are very busy. There is no large dramatic veining portion of the slabs that would create a unique pattern if mirrored next to each other .

So, between the lack of a unique pattern/movement + the "face" = I wouldn't have it them book match it. I would rather have the veining flow in one direction.

Dani, agree! Whenever it creates the ”face”, aren’t they are always soooo creepy?

This was posted in a different thread. I saw more then several ”faces”. It gave me nightmares!

That is bizarre. I see what you mean about the faces. I see it.

To tell you the truth, I don’t usually see faces - but tbh, I try not to look closely at the book matching, whenever I can. Sometimes it just jumps out at me, though. When it does, either I just see weird patterns that I don’t understand why anyone would find attractive - or sometimes, I see what looks like body parts. Maybe I need help. 😂

Generally, with the marbles, I tend to see... um.... lady parts? Maybe I ought to look for the faces instead. (rebunky's last quartzite photo is freaking me out, though)

Slabs 25 and 26 are sequential so they could be bookmatched, but I don't see a strong enough pattern to do that. Also the layout of the huge piece that wraps around the corner won't work for transit.

I think you'd need about 6 slabs to do this like you have shown.

I need to see the layout of the kitchen to understand where you require book matching . Often this requires many slabs and honestly only relly works where lage pieces come together and once you make a right angle corner it really does not matter anymore . The only place I ever do this in a alarge wall behind a range or a huge island often with waterfall sides I would never try this in your layout just make the island the size of one slab or just do the island .
