Banner Season Cancelled

last year
last modified: last year

A week ago, things were promising for a stellar season. A lot of plants are still performing well, but the steady heat has taken a toll on many plants as Mother Nature has given us the finger. Yesterday was supposed to be an improvement, but it was the most humid day of the week. Plants in full sun have a lot of browning and colors are badly washed out.

These pics are not from the last few days, as those are still not uploaded.

Impressionist Sky has looked good, but is hard to photograph because it is in a morning sun area.

Seventy Times Seven lights up its area.

Rose Masaterpiece has looked awesome, except for a couple of short scapes.

Grace Like Rain is reliable.

Safe Island has been a blooming machine. It's a Kirchhoff evergreen.

Purple Tarantula

Stop the Car. Flowers at the full-sun estate have now been scorched.

Missing Waldo is a colorful one.

Chili Spice has suddenly decided to perform.

Love N Loujean is in an area with dappled morning sun. Fortunately, most of my back yard has some shade relief.

Culver's intros have looked good. This is Spirit Fox. Unfortunately, some of his other intros are in the all-sun area. (Remember that Celeste drove--was it a hundred miles?--to get this one.)

Fire Pegasus is in a sunny area.

Special Candy has looked very good after a lousy year last year. Bud count is modest. A few of last year's good performers are bummers this year.

Little Miss Understood. Coloration is similar to Mayan Warrior.

I'm sorry about your season. I hope it improves again.

I know what you mean about the heatwave. Some of my pinks a really washed out, and the foliage is beginning to brown despite all the rain. But these photos look really good. I'm loving Grace Like Rain, Seventy Times Seven and Spirit Fox.

You still have some great looking blooms despite the weather. As you know I Have some daylilies suffering in this weather. My earlies are not used to this high heat and less than ideal rainfall. There are still a few bright spots in the gardens…..some are giving mother nature the finger, just not enough of them.

Rose Masterpiece and Grace like Rain are looking great.

We have noticed colors being washed out too. We got a brief downpour yesterday, not enough to do anything but raise the humidity.

Having my season begin in April in constant rain becomes a bonus when compared to your situation. It is depressing to look forward to the blooms and have to deal with a heatwave! On these photos you have here, I do like the colors and form on Seventy Times Seven and Safe Island. Of course Rose Masterpiece is a winner.

Your photos sure look good, but I understand the heat. Many of my plants are washed out too. Supposed to be cooler for the next few days, with rain. Rose Masaterpiece is absolutely stunning.

We had overnight storms last night that shredded petals and knocked down scapes. .........I didn't know about Celeste and Spirit Fox. I grew it years ago and was not impressed. The color was not the shade of orange I usually like and the petals were triangular. There's a photo of mine on the nga data base. The form on yours looks rounder then what it did here. Maybe our heat wouldn't let the petals relax........Rose Masterpiece was one of my first daylilies (bought from a real daylily vendor). I enjoyed it for many many years. Yours looks lovely and pinker then what I remember.......Chili Spice interests me. Hope you post more of it.............Maryl

Goodness not what any gardener wants to go through not to mention having to work out in that blazing sun and humidity. I know what you mean and its been a stressful couple of weeks here to get anything done outside after 9:00am and not feel like a wet mop. These are wonderful pics. You have a great way of commenting good or bad as you see it in your garden.

Rose Masterpiece was always one of those daylilies(in a list with others) I would have great years and then bad ones. It looks great in your pic. I had grown Seventy Times Seven previously and it was a good performer most years.

From this group I would go with Safe Island. Nothing of that color in my garden. Does it open properly no issues typically?

The scorching temps are a disaster, and I am sorry you are dealing with them. /while we have had the scorchers, my season starts so early that it avoids some of that early and the rains have helped.

As always no matter the weather you still have gorgeous photos to post. Rose Masterpeice is just lovely. Purple Tarantula is handling the heat well from the photo. Fire Pegasus is a nice one and Seventy Times Seven and Safe Island have to bring a smile. Stp the CAr is a looker as is Spirit Fox and also Fire Pegasus. a Lovely post, Mantis.

Safe Island always opens well, but its performance from year to year has varied, perhaps because it is an evergreen.
