A Tale of Two Locations

last modified: 4 days ago

A little relief from the heat, and one overcast day good for pictures. But now the same narrative. Full-sun locations have more washed-out blooms. . Seems that this is becoming normal in the global warming era. January and February were below normal. June and probably July above normal (Mother Nature, make me a liar!).

I am not finished till I post names. I seldom post without names. (People do that on Facebook.)

Dragon Nation has bloomed a long time and in abundance (Culver, though Mussar introduced it as I recall).

Cancun Candy is vigorous.

Year of Jubilee is a Korth that took a while to establish. Nice this year, though I would prefer a few more inches.

Tiger By the Tail is about 5 inches.

Dennis Russell has had a superlative year, even after some division last year. I have more pictures of this one. Look at all those buds.

Latin Satin is a Kirchhoff, as I remember.

Paradise Bar and Grill is having a good year, as are many.

Time Stopper

Mal really is an excellent white.

Crintonic Painted Desert.

Mexican Magic has looked good.

Wyatt Earp, after taking off last year.

Mexicali Blues with a bloom of Kiss My Aura.

Morning Mood. There have been several exhilarating mornings in the garden. But the heat does its best to stifle.

Song of the Sea has been spotless. Emmerich.

Good bye Blue Sky, with a pic of Grace Like Rain at the bottom.

Davi's Dilemma

Marilyn's Dimple is still a smaller plant.

Mountain Orchid could be more vigorous.

Reed's White Chocolate has looked good and especially white rather than the cream of the past.

I See Stars is in the full sun.

Wild About You has its shares of slightly splotchy blooms earlier. A large Korth bloom.

Mean Green

Sabine Baur has been so clean this year. A shorter plant.

Dippity Doo Dah. This Davisson has a rebloom scape coming. A diploid.

Pray Without Ceasing. Sometimes imperfect.

Sultry Girls.

These all look great! It's hard to find one that doesn't appeal to me. I guess my top favorites would be Dragon Nation, Song of the Sea, and Morning Mood.

Is that Crintonic Painted Desert per chance? I can't tell from the glare of the sun on the middle, but some of the pictures on the NGA show intriquing color variations. I always assumed the variations vanished when exposed to the sun for any length of time. Still it looked different in print (so to speak).....I like that deep maroon/red and the golden yellow throat on I See Stars.... I always want to like Mean Green. It just needs a deeper orange for my taste.....Sultry Girls sure makes a statement. Nice one.............Maryl

Dragon Nation would be my pic because of the color combination. Different. I will go and look up Mal and White Chocolate as I could use another white/near white in the garden. I just don't want a "leaner" in the garden if you know what I mean. Mean Green was one of my favorites in NYS as were so many that got left behind.

I saw your response on Boundless Beauty and it has been blooming here this past week but the first 2 blooms did not open fully when they did finally open. Do you find for BB in your garden the buds seem to appear they will open but it takes several days to actually open fully?

I will have to take a closer look at BB when it blooms? It definitely does hang up sometimes (sometimes quite a bit). Yes, it's "Crintonic." A number of Curt's cultivars at some point changed to the preface "Crintonic." In Living Color is another one. Too bad a lot of good names were used for very antiquated cultivars. I think that if you click on the picture you will see color variation. It is not as pronounced as I saw at Crintonic on one occasion; it does vary. Houzz pictures are really meant to be clicked on.

Pray Without Ceasing is one that looks intriguing. I like the look. Morning Mood is one I did look up-obviously not readily available. Song of the Sea is another one I like. You are correct about Mal-I had it at one time but it disappeared one season and I suspect voles.

Pray Without Ceasing is very appealing when it is clean. So far this year, Every Knee Shall Bow has looked much better. But not easy to get pics in this hot sun.

I had Mal several years ago, it never bloomed and then disappeared. Just saw it is an evergreen, not surprised it didn’t last here. my favorite white here Is How High the Moon, yes it is tall and pure white.

Wow, just another wonderful post, Mantis!!! Tiger by the Tail was exciting me, thought maybe it would be one I could replace Parrots of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, same problem. Parrots is very short, plus it is evergreen, I think it is Marrott's, which are almost always doomed here, gain a fan, lose a fan. I have always liked Crintonic Painted Desert. I got Pray Without Ceasing last year and its blooms all looked good to be planted early June. When it first started blooming this season, with all the rain, it was horrible. Suddenly it started clearing up and looking beautiful. Had its final bloom yesterday and in the heat it was faded, but still beautiful. Large flowers for such a beautiful daylily. I always admire Every Knee Shall Bow and will probably get it one of these days.

Mountain Orchid is a lovely edge no eye daylily. It's too bad it's not more vigorous. I also like Song of the Sea and White Chocolate.
