I am far from expert, but as a serious home cook I'll say the first design looks pretty good to me - I would find it easy and pleasant to cook in - with the glaring exception of the countertop cabinet by the range. I would NOT do one there for so many practical reasons. The one by the fridge is good! You don't need symmetrical towers on that wall. Keep the corner with a normal upper. I always do my prep between the stove and sink, and the layout is very friendly for that to work well.

So half the kitchen is filling space to fill space, and the other half has the functional parts haphazardly thrown together because there isn't enough wall space for everything that needs it.

Here's a out of the box idea. Put a wall up behind the current island. Turn that inside space into a walk in pantry for the appliances, microwave, etc. Put the refrigerator on that wall, move the stove to the current refrigerator wall, and the sink to the upper window.

Check the specs for the refrigerator model you plan to get (or already have) and make sure you can open the left side door all the way - enough to pull out the drawers for cleaning. Right now the fridge looks too close to the wall, so you could put the tall cabinet + appliance garage to the left of the fridge instead of to the right. (You could make it a full height pantry too, with a space for microwave.)

I second the idea to skip the uppers down to the counter near the range - cuts down too much on your landing space there. I'd want my range a bit further from the corner too. For your consideration, you could swap the DW and trash pull out so that the DW isn't between your sink and range (common prep zone.) Or you could put the DW to the right of the sink and have the trash pullout in your island.

I recommend measuring your biggest pots and skillets to make sure your drawers will fit them. Finally I'm tagging @Buehl as she's really good at layouts.

The corner cabinet conflicts with the range hood. Maybe no uppers on that wall at all. Or put the counter cabinet/tower on the left, then the fridge, so it gets out of that corner so it can be opened.

Consider reducing the coffee bar size and widening the opening into the dining room instead.

Can you show a sketch of the whole floor? Any chance of changing the powder room door location?
