Do you mean cabinets, and not counters? I wouldnt paint counters, for sure. In any case if you do mean the cabinets, no, I wouldnt paint them. What I would do is find a place for all the clutter, so the kitchen looks brighter. I would also repaint the walls, and pick a light bright color, or if you want to keep the wall color you have, then at least find some colored accessories, and nice art work. It also takes good lighting to brighten up a room. Led light bulbs, that are daylight type and at least 3500k, will brighten it up considerably.

No. Your kitchen looks plenty bright to me, and painting the backside of the counter white isn't going to add anything to the space. The wall color is drab, changing that out for something less....blah...is the way to go here. Doesn't have to be a bright color, just something "cleaner" in tone. Agree with above about cleaning up the clutter.

I think to lighten it up you could remove a barstool to have 4 there. Unless you actually dine there and require all of them to be there.

Oops it looks like that is 4. So maybe get less bulky looking ones.
