Catching up on Tuesday

We have been very busy and I haven't had much time to take photos or post/comment. The AHS Region 2 Summer Meeting is this weekend and we have been digging tons of plants for the event. The final count will be about 350. I took a few minutes to post while Bob is digging a bunch for me to process.

This is a seedling we purchased from Bret Clement. Bret said he doubted he would register it, but we are excited about it because it is a reverse bitone, which are rather rare. It has a really nice shape with petals and sepals curling. We have been working on reverse bicolors so its pollen went around the garden.

The deer nibbled on Ferocious but luckily left some buds to open. We really like this one--big flower on tall scapes.

Jelly Roll Morton was new to the garden last fall.

Last Chance for Love just opened its first flower. It is registered as a late. It will probably be our bud and branching winner too. The scapes are not expanded enough yet to see how many buds, but it looks like 5 way branching.

Olive's Odd One is a cute reverse bitone.

I wish I knew the name of this one. Somebody on this forum suggested Opera Elegance. We finally tracked down and purchased Opera Elegance. The color and blooming time are about the same, but I'm not sure that the scape height and shape of the flower is the same.

It's so great when I photograph the flower and get the gator in the photo. This is Petalacious Perfection, another reverse bitone we are working with.

This seedling belongs to our daughter. It is (Gus Townsend X Desire of Nations) X (Painted on Jean X Purple Goliath).

This seedling is Sonoran Desert Rose X Reindeer Antlers. It remains to be seen if it will be an improvement on Reindeer Antlers.

I might have posted this before. It is Chomp X Ruffled Strawberry Parfait. It is a smallish flower--about 5 inches--on a late blooming plant. It's lined out to be a 2026 intro.

Ferocious and your NOID are my favorites of the first bunch. Chomp X Ruffled Strawberry Parfait is an appealing late bloomer. Your daughter's seedling has a pretty face!

Got to go with the oranges. The Noid is a standout with that color combination......... Olive's Odd One gets my attention, but I'm on the fence about it. It looks rather stippled on the petals. Maybe just the photo..............Maryl

All three seedlings are lovely, the Chomp seedling is my favorite……that edge is magnificent. I like the noid, great color and a bitone.

Maryl, you are correct--the petals on Olive's Odd One are stippled while the sepals are solid. I'm not wild about stippling, but I don't mind it on Olive's Odd One. It is pretty heavy which makes it look less washed out or muddy as some stippled flowers do.

You are digging plants to sell? To be distributed as trial plants? I see that Ferocious has unidentified parentage. I had another Northern Lights plants turn out to be a mistake.The percentage of wrong cultivars sent far exceeds that of any other vendor I have ever used.

Haven’t ordered from Northern Lights in a few years. An error on each order is unacceptable to me. Many reliable sellers I would rather use.

Mantis, Bob and I are providing the gift plants for the AHS Summer meeting. We registered three for the event--Moon over the Wabash, Hoosier Belle, and Lafayette Lady. We also donated several for the auction. Hoosier Daylily Society will have a booth there selling plants to benefit our club. We donated several to that endeavor. We are leaving for Lafayette, IN tomorrow and still have not finished digging and washing all the plants. We bit off more than we can chew. I guess we keep forgetting that we are not young anymore.

I am sorry that you have had such bad luck with Northern Lights. I don't believe we have ever gotten a mislabeled plant from them. After trying to manage the few we offer for sale, I think it is a miracle we don't get more misidentified plants. This summer we have found several 'aisle babies' (our name for daylilies growing in the aisle either from a leftover piece from the previous seedling bed or a piece of a daylily we moved 2 or 3 years prior. Since we don't deadhead the flowers, there is always the possibility of a seedling growing from dropped seed. It takes diligence to weed those imposters out.

I, too, like those bitones. Last Chance for Love is such a pretty one. And I like Ferocious . Chomp X Ruffled Strawberry Parfait is my kind of bloom too. Bret Clement'' seedling is a delicate beauty.
