Clematis - can I cut them back now?

I have a couple that bloom in early summer and they have stopped blooming weeks ago. I just started working in that area and see that I'd like to cut them back. I relocated them in the spring and they established fine and flowered, but they're stingy with the flowering stems. I'd like to cut them back to trigger new growth from the base and then add some compost and water them in well. But as I had the clippers in my hand, I hesitated and thought, why not ask someone instead of just barreling ahead...lol. So is this a good job for now or should I wait for the spring?
