2025 COTTAGE GARDENS visit part III

FROM AGE TO AGE THE SAME

PRINCESS OF CANDYLAND (Another Douglas intro. This was my favorite bloom in the garden. He did not have enough to sell. I am on the lookout for a piece of this one.)

THE BEAST (I came home with this one. It is spectacular in my opinion. I am 6'1" and it was up to my shoulder. The bloom was 7.5 to 8 inches). While I was there, there was a couple who wanted a piece of it, and I was the only one who got a piece of this year. Brent kept a double fan for himself and hopes that it will double next year. I have spread its pollen on several reds.

BENTLEY SAMUEL: An unusual bloom. If, I had more cash on me, this one may have come home with me.

SUNNY WITH A CHANCE OF WINE Brent and I spoke about all of these plants with this look. I said how many more yellows does one need to have that have this type of pattern. He agreed with me as he has many and I really could not tell the difference between many of them. He said that he believes he's done purchasing them. He will only purchase one if it is really unusual.

WHISTLING IN THE DARK

PASSING SHADOW: One of those color changers. A really cool looking bloom, but it won't have a place in my garden.

SING OUT LOUD (for those who like small blooms)

SUFFERING SUCCOTASH (love the name and the color. I will get this one next year)

THE GIFT OF GIVING (this one made it home with me. I am a sucker for this color pattern)

It was a wonderful visit. I spent five hours roaming his garden and seedling beds. I forgot to get a picture of a few of his seedlings. He had a dark burgundy, almost black that did not slick in full sun and the substance was really thick and looked great at 2:30 pm. I also pointed out that he had a very nice white seedling that he apparently missed. He dug it up and moved it to the house.

I tried to take a variety of pictures and not just ones that I liked, because I knew I would be posting them on this site, and not everyone has my taste in daylilies. I was really surprised that I came home with a double, but DOUBLE MY SUNSHINE really stood out in the garden. It is a hose in hose double and that is my favorite double form.

That is it from this trip. I will be there again next year.

I think the Beast was a good choice you made. I just went and looked it up. Looking forward to seeing how it does in your garden next year. Thanks for sharing your trip pics.

The one that stands out to me the most is The Beast. I will be watching to see how it does for you in future years. I looked it up and saw Cimarron Rose in its lineage. So many of the reds/pinks I've bought over the years have Cimarron Rose as a parent: The Ultimate Sacrifice, Fighting Fire, Patriot's Day, Click Bait, and Judy's Jewel. Water in the Wilderness was the other one that stood out to me. Lots of nice watermarks on this post.

Thanks for posting all these. I can tell where your color preference lies!!! Love that color as well. The Beast certainly looks impressive. I have Double My Sunshine but it is in an out of the way garden bed so rarely photograph it. Suffering Succotash looks lovely enough to be on a want list.

I can certainly see the appeal of The Beast. The darker colors look so good in a cooler climate then mine this time of the year. As for how many yellow splattered patterns can one have? For me I would need one that is colorfast/sunfast in 95 plus heat that also has plenty of buds and is winter hardy as well. I bet that would eliminate 90% of the ones out there..........Maryl

Wow, there are a lot of beauties here!! FROM AGE TO AGE THE SAME is my favorite of all of these. [love the song too]. The Beast is next. Spacecoast Red Dazzler, The Gift of Giving, SUFFERING SUCCOTASH, Whistling in the Dark, and From Sea to Shining Sea are all beauties as well.

I agree with you about Princess of Candyland. It is so pretty. It looks like you made a good choice with The Beast. I would be spreading that pollen too. Sing Out Loud also catches my eye. I love the small one. Thanks again for sharing your trip.

From Sea to Sea grows here and is a great plant with lushly intense color. Cimarron Rose never grew well here, so I always look with suspicion on its progeny. But I know it has been widely used. Red Dazzler was very nice this year, but is not the strongest plant. Love God's Way--a hardy Bell? I see that Candyland is out of Exotic Starfish, which I have grown for a long time, but didn't like last year's winter.
