Shower shield good or bad?

shower only 42" wide. Cannot seem to find a 5 star installer for a new glass shower door. Custom will be my only choice ($$$) SO what is the minimum width shower to use a shower shield effectively? (the bathroom floor is tile so a little bit of splashing would not be disastrous)
