Variations of Echium pininnana

I have two Echium pininana growing side by side. One of these looks to be something highly unusual and rare. It's either a genetic freak or maybe some alternate variety or subspecies. The plant on the left is a very traditional Echium pininana, with the drooping, large leaves clearly forming at the base. The plant on the right has thin leaves that barely have any surface. The main stem is actually a double stem that is joined together to form a highly elliptical shape. Can someone help me identify the unusual plant on the right?
