How to handle an overgrown ivy?

I've had this plant for 2 years - it is a descendant of a plant belonging to my great-grandmother Minnie, so that's what I call her.
She is clearly very happy in a south window - usually I have the blinds closed half way, so she doesn't get direct sun. What's the best way to deal with the long vines? Wrap them down around the hanger? Lop them off periodically?
