I have lights similar to your current ones in our stairway. I dont like mine either. I dont get around to replacing them because I dont see anything I really love, so I’ll be following. I think the Minka one Annie posted would look nice with your woodwork.

I second Lamps Plus. I found my floor lamp in antique brass that I wanted for years.

It kind of depends on whether you want to lean into rusticity or update it.

What are the other fixtures that you like in the house? What lamps are you using or keeping or moving? Photos of those will help find the style you are aiming for.

If you find something now is great, but if you do not, fixtures are very easy to take down, put back up, and then replace later.

I also have the same look. My fixtures are ALL Minka! The half circle seems dated. I "had" about 20 around the house to replace. I'm buying ALL mine @ Ferguson....I liked these...Link I put 2 of these in a bedroom: By Vaxel.....(they WERE on sale $79each)

FYI: I'm replacing mine in groups. The bedrooms have two each....those are different for each bedroom. The downstairs walls have 3...those are different than the loft 3.

YES....exposed bulbs provide MORE light. The Minka have a tea stained lens...they just glow....and look Antique. They cast a yellow light with that lens...I tried living with them first. LED bulbs are NOT harsh....it's a new era for lighting....it's an Edison LED bulb....

I'm living with ALL Minka....that everyone likes....:0) They work...they just make the place look dated. Minka makes several: They really are NOT enough light. I only have ONE sconce going down the stairs. I'm still shopping for THAT one...and the single one going UP the stairs....THIS Minka isn't half round...but still would glow antique yellow....the half circle...nice...but dated...

@Annie Deighnaugh - I love that Minka Knotted Iron one - perfect. I need to find some other photos to see what it looks like from the top. I don't want another one like I have in the stairway where you see the bulb sticking up.

Okay - I think I like this one too though of course over my original budget. The other one is only 4.5 inches high so I think I’d be looking at the bulb in the stairway. Though I also like Regency Leaf - Annie’s #8. I always like leafy stuff - no floral but leaves are good.

Not bronze, but what about a flat wood sconce? Maybe not this one, but something like it? It’s not too rustic, kind of modern, but natural.

In the woodsy Minnesota setting, I like the first and second options that Nicole shared in her second post.

I would tone down the rusticity where I could so that these things play nicely together. INexpensive lighting seems like a good opportunity to pivot a little.

Feathers and Nicole, I liked those two also. Another consideration for the stairwell though would be a fixture that is more horizontal than vertical. It seems it would spread out the light a bit more. 1929Spanish posted one from HD that would seem to fit ,but you might still have the issue of looking down at the bulbs. It is hard to tell from the picture.

I could always turn the half circle so the light is pointing down in the stairway and the other one could be up. I switched a bathroom light fixture that provided terrible lighting up and was great when flipped.

I meant...YOU could have asked me about the bulb. The bulb is positioned lengthwise across the top in the half circle Minka...yes you can see the bulb and the white back plate when descending the stairs.

@nicole is the half-circle dated? I'm really interested in this topic as I have numerous sconces that also could use replacing. I rather liked your half-circle suggestion.

@pricklypearcactus...Right now the stand out ones that scream "replace me!"....the tea stained cups & half round sconces. In my neighborhood everyones got those in their 2006 build. This 12 light fixture...I just took down. If I had antique furniture or lived in the deep South, it would still be OK. I don't on either accounts.

Sherry's brass-candle fixture is a classic! It's quality Brass.....never goes out-of-style. Mtn's picks with the little shades, in an old Victorian home...fine. Still a cool look. The half dome hanging fixture is still in style...I have one that's real alabaster I'm leaving...

I ended up ordering this - kind of boring but I decided I wanted white glass because it’s so dark in this house and also something that accommodated more than one 60 watt bulb. I always use LEDs but sometimes the larger watt bulbs are so big they don’t fit. I ordered from the Big River so I can easily return if I don’t like them. And if I do I have time to get them to the house before I leave for the winter.

Nicole, that chandelier would not be ok with antiques or in the deep South. I have decades of experience with both.

3Katz, we have eight sconces in our current staircase (three stories) on two circuits. I suggest adding a dimmer switch. I like the white glass since it hides the bulbs, softens the light and won't show dust.

3katz, I like that sconce. You will not have such a glare from it.

I've been looking at lighting for a couple of remodels over the past ten years and all the websites show the same old stuff they were selling back then, so it all looks dated to me. The stuff that looks fresh and stylish is very expensive.

I like your choice, 3katz. I saw it when I was browsing the river site. I also liked this one. It's 2" smaller in both directions.

@Allison0704 - I was thinking about dimmers as I believe someone else mentioned that. I didn't think I needed them as it usually seems like I don't have enough light rather than too much. However these fixtures will provide a lot more light than what I have so it's probably a good idea and easy enough to do. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

@Eileen - I like that one too though I keep leaning toward something with less of a metal base.

Now I'm reminded of the ugly outdoor fixtures we have in SC. I think I'll get rid of those this winter too.

If you are going for dimmers and want to use led bulbs, you have to make sure they ”match”. Not all led bulbs and dimmers work together, why ???, I do not have them, but have read about it.

I have learned so much on here, that I wish I knew before we did the bathrooms, lol.

@Sherry8aNorthAL - I haven't had any problem with dimmers and LEDs as long as I buy dimmers that say they're suitable for LED bulbs.

They have probably fixed since I read that.
