The restaurant at the Beacon Hill Bookstore is so busy it undoubtedly subsidizes the bookstore. In fact the bookstore may be their version of a waiting room with a big screen tv, or those snaking lines of people roped off in Disney World and for TSA security. Or the awful gift shops in the lobby of the (even worse) Cracker Barrels 🙄 They also have lots of other merch, all book related or in some way literary. I myself purchased a baseball cap for golf with the store’s embroidered logo on it (squirrel sitting atop a stack of books). This is how independent bookstores survive now. Our little town has one and they serve lunch, wine, and occasional dinners. They also host dessert nights and other food related events and they sell a few housewares, expensive chocolates and nicely made children’s costumes among the kids’ books. 🤷‍♀️

I am pnly 10 minutes in and I was noting a few things in prep for posting on this one .GMTA!

Her bookstore really is a charming spot in one of our favorite neighborhoods. They even promote a little "house tour" of houses where famous writers lived. (self guided, exterior ogling only)

Just yummy. I think her LR chairs are the same fabric I used on my DR chairs ... whatever they are i love them.

I really like her idea of a DR table that is a library table when not in use. Tho I question how it fits 8 people, and where are the chairs kept.

The bookstore is lovely but something about it bothers me. I think it is that I think it is more of a hobby than a business, because the decisions there make no economic sense to me, even in such a lovely 'hood, and even if she was able to get discounts for promoting brands. It feels more like a self-indulgent vanity project than a business, and IDK, somehow "unfair" to competing independent bookstores. That said, the decor and cafe are a draw and maybe it isn't "stealing" business as much as creating new business. Maybe it's just me.

I think independent bookstore’s only survive on passion. Hobbies are passion so maybe that is her niche for success. I spent my youth working at an independent bookseller in Madison ct that is still very successful and also has a successful small cafe in the back, so I have a penchant for her store and hope it too succeeds.

As soon as the camera showed her walking down the street, I knew this would be a tour that I would love. Her tasteful appearance immediately caught my attention. That continues into the spaces she owns. She is lovely and so is her home and bookstore.
