Living Room Design Help

Hey all,
We just moved into a new house in Colorado, and and are wanting to start again in terms of furniture and decor. I am not the creative type at all when it comes to this kind of stuff. Could anybody give me some ideas on how to plan this room? We're not looking to put a TV here, and I think we can afford to spend a $2k -$3k on all things needed. I am looking for a more minimalist look, and not too cluttered. I have 2 kids under 10, and an old cranky dog, so not looking to have anything that's lighter colored (white, beige, etc). Any help would be appreciated! If any other info is needed, please let me know!

For a $2-3k budget for rugs, lighting, seating for four, and coffee/end tables Facebook MarketPlace, Craiglist, and buy nothing are you going to be your best bets.

How much do you think I'd need to spend for the living room? I'm okay with bumping up the budget for needed things, but I just wanted to get some ideas on how to layout couches, styles of rugs, bookshelves etc. And the budget was mostly for furniture; we're already planning on changing the lighting and have some photos and art we're planning on putting up on the walls. None of it has to be high end furniture, either. I'm okay with Ikea, and other big box stores like Living Spaces and American Furniture Warehouse.
