Lovely photos, Sue. Tide pools are my favorite thing about Northern California and Oregon beaches.

Were you surprised at how different the Pacific is from the Atlantic? Not just the beaches but the towns along the coast? My two sisters live on Cape Cod so I was used to touristy, crowded, upscale beach towns with great food and shopping. Here it's just the oposite. You go to the beach for the scenery. And you don't swim because it's too cold and dangerous.

Yes, Eileen, it was almost eerie that we were often the only, or just a few, people on the beach! Of course we picked the right time of year, off season, but still our New England beaches are more populated. And it seems like most people bring their accommodations with them, via campers/RVs. So maybe that’s one reason there aren’t many great hotels?

We really enjoyed staying here. Not fancy but really cute, and we had fresh eggs both mornings. There was a cutting garden and a veggie garden that we could get our own flowers or veggies, too.

Amazing photos of such beautiful country. I think all the RV's are a result of not many hotels, not the other way around. Housing is probably not profitable in the winter months so maybe that explains the lack of it. The area you were in is very far from any population centers - Portland to the north and San Francisco to the south, so it's not exactly a week-end get away area.

Oh Bunny, I knew you were somewhere around there! But we were in Jenner for only, oh, 12 hours? Our hotel there had the most amazing view, wish we had been able to stay longer.

Sue, where did you stay?

I grew up in the South Bay and Santa Cruz was my stomping grounds. I was used to wide, gentle beaches with boardwalks and roller coasters. The Sonoma County (and northward) coasts are more rugged and wild. I'm very fortunate to live here.

Bodega Bay was our favorite day trip when we lived in Davis.

Oh, that first shot looking across the river's end over the bank to the ocean brings back wonderful memories. My husband and I would paddle our kayaks in the fresh water, with harbor seals swimming nearby, then put in on the bank and eat sandwiches looking out over the ocean. Bonus: pelicans diving for dinner. There is something so beautiful about those funny looking birds diving like arrows from the sky.

Eileen, that's a bit of a drive from Davis, but from the heat to the cool ocean breeze must be worth it. The couple who lives across the street from me is retired and for 5 days a week they stay at Doran Beach in their motor home and serve as volunteer greeters. Not a bad gig.

Bodega Bay is still one of my favorite weekend getaways from San Francisco. I love staying in a house on the hill overlooking the bay and the ocean.

Sueb, all your photos are frame-worthy! I was surprised to read they were taken with a phone, but i guess I shouldn’t be with your eye. Thanks for sharing this bit of your vacation. It reminded me of our trek down the coast from Astoria to just south of Florence and then inland to Crater lake. You are right, there weren’t many places to stay overnight.

@Sueb20, have you ever thought of taking your pictures in RAW mode? (do not confuse this with taking pictures in the raw!) I know very little about it except DD and DSIL use it when they are taking ”important” pictures. DSIL does a lot of editing of his photos.

DD turned it on on my phone while we were in Iceland. Go to Settings, scroll down to (or search for) Camera. In Camera, scroll down to Formats. In Formats turn on ProRAW & Resolution Control.

When you go to take a picture, you can turn it on and off here:

Good luck. btw, RAW gobbles data! I keep it off on my phone most of the time.

Bb, thanks! I had no idea. I know DH has ”raw files” from his fancy camera but didn’t know that was an option on my phone.

Thanks Bb! i had no idea phones had RAW mode! I used it a lot on my old Nikon. I have a new iPhone coming so will be sure to try it on the new one.

I think maybe we all need teenagers or twenty-somethings to tell us these things.

Such great pictures! I just love that coastline. Glad you had a good trip.

The route was phone to ipad to shutterfly app. I ordered 8” x 8”, figuring any smaller wouldn’t really be worth framing. I know nothing about pixels and any photo technology! Ack. DH might actually have taken a similar pic with his fancy camera; he is still sorting and processing his millions of photos.
