Shade sails would be one way to handle this. If you have them custom made, the dealer could provide drawings of possible ways to attach them.

Because of the poor visual placement of the gable and functionally directing water into the wall, and the size of upstairs window, a roof would have to be flat. Would an open pergola be sufficient instead of a built traditional roof? You can still hang linear heaters and fans, or use portable pedestal heaters.

Any roof/structure you extend out to the edge of the garage will compete visually with the front entry. But a pergola, because there won't be a large dark space underneath and will "feel" like a "lighter" structure, will be less imposing against the entire house as well. Also, at minimum, lots more low plantings, similar to what is currently overtaking the front sidewalk, will help direct one's focus towards the front door (along with opening up the plantings along the front sidewalk), as well as hide the tall concrete stem wall.

How big is the space ? The pic is not really very good at showing the area you are asking about. I find front patios are rarely used often just because they are so open to passersby . Maybe a motoried awning could be the answer I think to try to close this in at all will be awkward visually . Do you have other outdoor spaces ?Looks like a renovation so what was the plan for that space ?

I would hire a designer or architect for ideas. Re the comment that ”front patios are rarely used” I suppose it depends upon where you live. They’re very common where I live ( beach So Cal ) & ours is used year around. Sometimes it’s a matter of necessity ( small 25’ W lots ) or often, to enjoy the views. I would guess that 90% of the homes in my neighborhood have one.

If you want a permanent structure then I would also hire for this and see if you can make changes to the front of the house that give you a covered area. We have a covered front entry and it is really awesome. If you want to just he covered occasionally and keep the house as is otherwise I might do a retractable awning and put it out as needed.

As for the comment that front patios are rarely used I disagree. We often sit on ours after dinner as the sun sets to the west and the sky is magic.

I also agree front patios are lovely, ours is south facing and sitting there in the spring and fall is lovely. we have so many nice conversations with neighbors this way.

DIY? ready made install or stick built? Budget?

I think I was misunderstood but we have a front deck in our new house and my hubby loves sitting there in the afternoon with a beer so I guess it trully does depend on the house and neighborhood. We live where the homes are modest and also low traffic so makes a bit more sense. I do agree this will be a challenge to get right so a pro now is a must

I also notice there is a stubbie gutter in the corner with no downspout (yet?). You can hide the downspout with a pergola post, not sure about a horizontal running over the patio or down the stair, but something to consider with all of it.

Motorized retractable awnings look nice from inside and outside the house, and you can usually get one that is close to the color of your siding. This might work for you.
