Yesterday - deer fern, winterberry Berry Heavy gold, and bunchberry.

The only time when planting is tricky is when the ground is frozen...which occurs rarely and only for a few days. Autumn is the best and busiest time of year foralmost every aspect of horticulture apart from cuttings and division...ànd even then, there are hardwood slips to start.

I apologize as I know we have had previous threads about this i.e. being able to garden outside through all of the Fall and much of the winter in a coolish weather climate eg the UK, but I do find it intriguing. I do wonder what perennials are available for purchase in say January and February.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9), when did you actually plant this very late blooming salvia??

I planted the same salvia several years ago not realizing then that it was a way late bloomer but it was worth it as frost held off in our location until into November and it was in bloom in late October. Here is a picture from October 25/2022:

I divided some hostas and planted those under a grand, old rhodie.
Waiting for leaf drop so I can transplant some blueberries that now get too much shade (and raccoons think they are a self serve candy store). I am creating new garden along driveway where an old apple tree had to be removed. Perfect spot for a veggie garden!.

I planted around 20 Bergenia which got to me by accident when I ordered other plants. I just got a second card board Box... a white flowering cultivar (would habe prefered pink-magenta) but I got rid of some boring Geranium and thuggish Stachys byzantina "Big Ears", so I really look forward to their overall performance, used them mainly as edging

I haven't been planting of late, instead garden clean up is priority now that hard frosts have occurred .... though, here's some recent acquisitions to hold over in the garage for winter. Am more and more getting into conifers and have something like a hundred about the place.

Illicium parviflorum Bananappeal. This one is an experiment even here in zone 8b Portland Oregon. If anyone in the PNW has experience growing it I would love to hear about it.

I grew Illicium Star Flower Scorpio through one winter in my Dallas Oregon garden and it was completely undamaged...but it was a mild winter.

A couple of weeks ago I planted 3 each of Echinacea pallida, Asclepias incarnata, Calamintha blue, Lupinus Gallery Red and Asclepias tuberosa plus 3 Hosta - Silly String, Lemon Snap and Tarheel Blue. I took apart a large patch of Crocosmia and re planted it as well.
