Excessive vibration Miele W1 washer

last modified: 10 months ago

My new Miele W1 washer is vibrating excessively on the spin cycle. I can see the machine strongly shaking and feel the vibrations in the floor underneath my feet. I realize some level of vibration is always going to be there but this seems over the top.

It was levelled side-to-side and front-to-back by installers, so that's not it. What could be causing the excessive vibration? There is no knocking or banging sound when it's spinning, just the vibration. The appliance store is sending a tech out, but I'd like to know potential causes to be better informed when they're here.

The machine is on a Miele pedestal, installed by installers. I don't see why the pedestals would have any bearing on things since they're properly installed, but thought I'd mention it.

What type of floor structure is involved? Did the previous washer at that location exhibit similar vibration? Absolute bubble-level isn't as much of a factor as the machine's weight evenly distributed/supported across the four legs. A possible way to confirm that is place a piece of paper or a dollar bill beneath one of the pedestal front legs, set the machine spinning with a load that exhibits some vibration and try pulling the paper out. It shouldn't slip out very easily. If so, adjust that leg downward a smidgen at a time until the paper is as resistant as possible to pulling out.

There are shock asorbers. I know on a Samsung washer, it's an easy replacement...there are 4. On a Miele....Link

"What type of floor structure is involved? Did the previous washer at that location exhibit similar vibration?"

Ceramic tile floor, 4" grouted tile; pretty large grout lines. The washer was in the location the dryer now is (reversed the machines). I can't say as though I noticed excessive vibration on the old machine, but it was a top-loader and the drum always seemed off balance during spin (made kind of a knocking sound), but honestly I never really paid attention to it.

I can't lift the machine-pedestal to slide something underneath -- this is one HEAVY set-up. I can barely push it. Maybe together with DH we could maybe try pushing it a little this way, a little that way while it's spinning to see if there's a spot on the floor that resolves things. I suppose it probably couldn't make it any worse in the interim before I'm on the tech's schedule.

    "There are shock asorbers."

The initial frame in the video doesn't look anything like what my machine is doing. It's spinning just fine and the drum is in balance -- I know because I've stood there with a flashlight looking into it while it's spinning. Also, no bouncing, knocking, or clanging noises; just the noise of the vibration against the floor (the feel of it in the floor is kind of unsettling...). But then again IDK maybe it could be the shock absorbers, that's something the tech would have to tackle.

If you went from a top loader to a front loader, and it doesn’t serm to be off balance, I wonder if the higher rpms of the spin cycle isn’t just what you’re noticing? If it’s not banging or knocking, just the much heavier, faster spinning machine might be acting perfectly normally?

She says she ”can see the machine strongly shaking,” and this does not sound normal go me. A quick google led to Miele’s UK site suggesting to check that the transport stabilizing mechanism has been removed, and elsewhere suggesting that if the machine was run without removal, the warranty could be voided. So I hope it’s not that!

@porkchop_z5b_MI - Have you run a spin cycle with an empty load? If so, does it still shake?

You have at least two sources of trained, expert professional assistance to turn to:

1 - Miele Customer Support. I may have mentioned this to you before. The few times I've called them about the several Miele products I have, they've been exceptionally competent and helpful.

    2. Your installer. Are they a Miele authorized service provider?

No one on this site, myself included as a decades-long Miele washer owner and user, has anywhere near the technical experience, training or competence of the preceding two sources, these are what's needed to help you.

Contact one or both of the above, that's the best approach (in my experience) to get your concern addressed. Good luck

Follow Elmer's suggestions. We've had Mieles for many years too. They shouldn't vibrate when new. Our old one does a bit but it makes no difference to the performance.

Running the machine with an empty load is a good suggestion. The "load" of laundry can be out of balance. Please try THIS and report back.

If you stop the machine and re-adjust the laundry to be more balanced.....do you get results? Do you wash towels(heavy) with light fabrics(T-shirts)...?

I haven't had a chance to try that yet.

    Not usually.

My husband & I repair washing machines for our rentals. We notice certain models are more sensitive to the weight of the load being spun. Never worked on a Miele. The Samsung top load we have, top-of-the-line, is very sensitive....and that's how it's supposed to work. Don't be surprised if they can't find anything "wrong" with the machine. Note: levelling is still a possibility....the installers can get it wrong...

It's not impossible that there are minute differences in manufacturing tolerances of the drum and outer tub and other related structures from one specimen to another. I have two of what are essentially the same toploader model. One has detergent and softener dispensers, the other has detergent, softener, and bleach .. that's the only difference between them, other than the first is Sept 2007 manufacture date, the other is June 2009. The 2007 specimen exhibits a pronounced vibration during spin at the middle speed (670 RPM), which doesn't occur at low (330 RPM) and high (1,010 RPM). The 2009 specimen is smooth at all speeds. Both are on a travertine floor on a concrete slab.

@porkchop_z5b_MI Did you find out what the problem is? Sounds like the machine was unable to balance the load. Sometimes that's just because of what's in the load. I have an older machine and it has trouble balancing with medium to large loads and with heavy items like blankets.

^^ They had a tech come out, and he checked everything, said nothing is wrong. Seems to be operating perfectly otherwise, and I've never had cleaner clothes, so I guess maybe it's just the super-high rpm's on max spin combined with the fact it's on a bit of an uneven surface (described above). But really IDK for certain. The problem doesn't exist to any great degree on lower spin speeds.

They are coming back out again to replace both pedestals, they are defective. So they're going to have to uninstall and re-install the whole shebang. It will be interesting to see what the vibrating is like after they re-install and the machines are probably going to end up in a slightly different spot on the tile.

I have to say, though -- both the local appliance shop and Miele have been terrific. The appliance shop has been out multiple times, no questions asked, and Miele is replacing the pedestals lock stock and barrel -- again, no questions asked, no grief whatsoever, and not one penny of charge. I am very impressed with the service from both agencies.

Interesting that the pedestals were found to be defective. That seems to be such a simple part. Do the clothes come out pretty dry or do they come out soggy because of this? Usually, when the machine is unable to balance a load, it comes out kind of soggy.

    Yep, they are dry.

One drawer is sticky and takes more effort than one would expect to open, and the other drawer doesn't extend all the way.
