Large mirrors like that are typically glued to a wall. In what way do you want to update it and what about it do you not like? Show us more of the room so we can see what would look best.

If you want a more contemporary loo, I'd first try painting the white the same color as the wall.

Here is the rest of the bathroom. I think it is the wood framing that turns me off. Love your suggestion of painting it the same color as the wall!

It is perfectly fine. It's painted to match the vanity, you can paint it to anything YOU LIKE.

could you do a bottom up blind and still have privacy? or I might be tempted to do a window film - the extra light from outside would be nice

Well you've made this space quite fun! I'd paint the window trim and mirror trim the same color as they wall. They will reduce the black and whiteness of the space. Change drawer pulls to chrome or some other less black against white metal. What color is your faucet?

I was just going to say the same as Kendrah--paint the trim and mirror frame the same as the wall color. It will add some drama to the space.
