Btw, I really think you do have ”talent and skill” with design. You underestimate yourself. The initial rugs that you put up for review are great choices for your space. You have a good eye. The rugs that you chose connect the dots and anchor the space. I think, in this case, keeping the rug more understated and neutral works well with your furnishings and room style. Then, you can easily bring in more color if you’d like, with accessories- such as pillow(s) and or a throw, your flowers and/or plants, maybe a piece of pottery, etc. This approach not only works well with your furnishings and room style- but also gives you flexibility; you are not locked into a particular color scheme- so you can simply change up some accessories, if you decide you want different colors.

You know what you are doing. The initial rugs you posted are actually sophisticated choices. And as you are trying out various rugs in the room, I also can see that you recognize what works and what doesn't work in your space. You have good instincts. You can trust them.

Thank you Freedom.. you are the sweetest! :) . i have had the BEST help on this site.. when I renovated my bedroom I had a fantastic lady help me go in the right direction.. at least it was for me.. I dont know if it technically works for decorators but for me I loved the end result.. so much better than I could of done myself and as you can see I go with sort of milder colors.. Oh I do have to mention.. I had one lady on here when I did my bedroom and she was beside herself that I did flowers in OUR bedroom where my husband had to sleep.. he doesnt care.. .. One other lady said... her father slept year under flowery bedding .. but it was under the covers that made him happy :)

Have you shopped locally for rugs? I find that seeing rugs in person really helps me to narrow things down. I am assuming you are looking for an 8x10?

In the States many places have rugs to see in person-not sure how many of these you have. Lowes, Home Depot, other Canadian home centers, HomeGoods/TJMaxx, grocery home stores, dept stores.

I also have ordered several small rugs from Ama$#$ to see them in person and then returned them. I did get a huge rug (11.5 ft x 15.5ft) after doing that.

@RNmomof2 zone 5 brings up a good point about purchasing a small size in the rug first, so you can see it in person and check the colors, texture, etc.

Forgot to say this also. The online rug buying sites usually have visualizers where you can place a rug in your room. Easier to do over importing a rug pic to another site and placing it in your pic.

Yes, Goldenbird, that's the one I meant. But it appears you have many options, and you're the one who will have to live with it. I suggest you use some blue tape to mark out a 9x12 rug on the floor and upload a photo.

There is often a lot of pressure put on people when they post here to ”add color”. I am not in that camp.

The only reason I was offering “color” ideas, as such, is because I thought you wanted more vibrant color in the space. You were looking at the orange pillows, etc.

Everyone is not interested in a rainbow of colors in their space. And there are many ways to add contrast and interest in spaces that have neutral color schemes. You and your decorator did a fabulous job with the bedroom. Elegant!

Nancy R.. Now I am so confused.. Im not sure which direction... Originally I was happy with the 3 rugs. but now I am in a way questioning if I can pull off the color.. as I DO like it... So I am going to have to think about it.. I have time because the very top area rug that I was originally wanting.. its not available until March of 2026.. So I am either going to wait for it or find something I love.. Sometimes when you get something in the house and in position it can scare the heck out of you! at least me! freedom.. no no.. I DO LOVE color.. it just kinda scares me! Because its hard to get it RIGHT! If I buy at Am@z@n. the best thing is if it doesnt look good I can return it RIGHT away which I always do... Thats actually why I would love to have a decorating app where you can put everything together like that site I am using for the carpets.. boy that would HELP ALOT!! Funny when I bought that head board in my bedroom.. my husband set it up and I kept thinking to myself.. thats not going to work.. it was SO DIFFERENT than what I had before.. but i absolutely love it now! I dont want to make a mistake thats all :) And I know about the pressure for color .. I have been called bla before.. I guess it could be worse :)

Have you looked at any rugs in person? THose rugs you posted look very traditional to me and I'm not sure sure they go with your furnishings.

I think it just really helps to see rugs in person , even if it just helps you figure out what you like and don't like.

No I havent.. but the one on the left is a home depo product.. so I am pretty sure I can return it if I dont like it in the room.. I can always see if there is a smaller matt but at least I am able to see it in the room with that app I use.... even though colors can be a bit out on a computer screen.. the middle photo.. I really like the carpet too but Im not sure about the color...if it actually goes .. do you think the middle one clashes or do you think all 3 will work? Im just trying to widdle it down at this point to what works and what doesnt.. The rug on the right is brown.. even tho it looks sort of burgundy.. so I think that color would work

I think a muted blue would work with your colours perhaps a more contemporary style. I thisk the rugs with borders makes the area look smaller.

I think you’re interested in much warmer tones than muted blues, correct? Plus, you seem to like the more traditional styles, overall, as well. So I really think you were on target with your first rug choices. The third one leans a bit more contemporary. But all of them can work in a contemporary type of setting as well, and they work with your furniture. Then just bring in the reds and or browns, etc. (whatever colors you like) in a few added accessories. The colors on your existing throw pillows would tie in with the rugs and help to anchor the scheme.

imo, the latest rugs you posted are too traditional looking for your furniture.

I guess i sort of liked the ones with the color and I was all ready to go that way as I do kind of see what others are saying about Bla.. I guess its the contempory furniture then.... how sad.. lol.. I found one of the newer rugs with a black trim and I was going to buy it.. I dont know I guess I decided to go for color.. WARMER.. This one has a black trim and I THOUGHT it worked.... with colors and the art.. but again.. Im not a decorator... So you say this is a no way? Is my eye seeing the art and the colors for the room? We bought that furniture for the livingroom because we like comfort.. Hard to have both lol

It’s the style of the rug in combination with the colors of the rug that is not working with your furniture. You see how you have a couple of similar styles in your original picks - but they work fine with your furniture and space.

They give a nice (and chic) nod to traditional - but they don’t scream, ”Hey, I‘m taking over the room and I don’t care WHAT the furniture is doing!!” ;)

But you know this... because you are the one who chose those rugs! And I’m sure you looked at a LOT of rugs, before you settled on those.

A room does not have to have “color” in the rug in order to have “color” in the room.

As I said in my very first comment - go with colors that YOU like. There is no reason that you cannot bring in color with the rugs that you originally chose. And with colors such as red, purple/plum, etc. - you only need a little bit in accessories to make a big impact.

You will never please most of the people on this board. And if you even come close to pleasing some of them, you will likely be living in their dream space- not yours.

The other visuals I posted in comments were some that I created. These images below are a few that I just quickly found on Google search of ”neutral rooms with red accents”. There are many images there- these are just a few. A little bit of red can make a big impact. And just in general, adding color in accents to a neutral space can potentially have a sophisticated look, as well as a dramatic effect. You will notice that there is no “color” in any of the rugs below.

So the idea is- you do not need color in the rug to have color in the room. :)

Thank you Freedom for all the time you have given me.. and all the work you have done.. I think I am going to think about it for a while and really decide which way I want to go now... I cant buy that original rug until march when it is available anyways.. I MIGHT even think about the area rug lisedv posted.. it does look really good together and it is a bright room!

Consider a contemporary rug that feels more streamlined and add interesting cushions to pull the look together. I think you have narrowed down a look that doesn’t feel quite right and that’s why you are hesitating.

Imagine your room:

My sister, daughter and I have had lots of luck at HomeSense (rugs and cushions) and I think once you start looking at contemporary styles, you may surprise yourself. Good luck.

Maureen.. Yes.. I think contemporary is the word isnt it.. I have to find something I love in contemporary.. as much as I actually liked the rug below.. I think its fighting the furniture.. am I correct there?

There is nothing wrong with your original rugs. And you can add contemporary pillows if you’d like- with any of those rugs. And in warm tones... You don’t have to settle for baby blue and or shades of green, etc.

Your bedroom is lovely and you’ve made great choices; trust your instincts. It’s not that any of them are fighting with the seating, I just think room in general will benefit with a different look. Is there a HomeSense nearby? Unless you start comparing, you’ll never know.

Maureen.. yes there is a homesense near by.. but I dont trust my instincts to choose color... I perfer to find something where I can put the actual carpet IN THE room photo.. (with the app) so I can SEE it in there.. otherwise I will bring home some gwady carpet.. I can SORT of know it looks ok once I see it on the app.. if that makes sense.. For instance years ago we bought a sink for our bathroom.. it was sort of a goldish color.. keep in mind this is years ago lol.. we brought it home put it in the bathroom and it flipped to GREEN! I guess i dont have that eye to know for sure what works.. that is why I have always gone with safe.. safe colors cause I cant put colors together.. thats a little more difficult.. as much as I do LOVE color you know what your doing.. AND I guess I am learning.. I have contemporary furniture.. so I can only go contemporary really... No oriental rugs or whatever... I have to stick to somewhat plainer... And yes the lady that helped me with my bedroom.. She helped me alot and I LOVE our bedroom.. how it turned out.

lisedv.. thank you.. that carpet is a washable carpet.. have you ever bought one of those.. ? We are pretty clean so I always stayed away from the washable as I wouldnt want it all scrunched up.. as it is alot of times when you get a carpet its hard to unravel in the beginning.. usually having to put some wieghts on it for awhile.. Etsy and rugs usa I cant buy from as I am in Canada.. One more question.. do you have some sort of app to put everything together do you buy it somewhere?

You can go to Homesense and look at the rugs there. When you find one you like, take a picture of the manufacturers tag. GO home and look that rug up online, then you can put it in your room just like you have been doing.

I feel that is much safer to see the rug in person. When I was ordering rugs, I was surprised several times by rugs that did not look like the picture when I got them. I feel you are relying on the online picture too much. FInd a rug you like in person. It will also be easier to return one to Homesense or Lowes over trying to ship one back to a on line company. Plus you will have to pay to package it and maybe even return shipping.

I ended up with a rug that looks similar to the rug Lisa posted. It is nice an neutral and doesn't scream look at me! when you enter the room. I feel that you could find something like that local if you looked.

Can anyone in the group add these pillows to the couch photo so I can see what it looks like .. I dont have anything that can do that for me unfortuntely . I would just like to SEE what it looks like please..

You’re ahead of yourself. Get the rug in the room, then focus on pillows. One step at a time. What you see on a screen is not what you may see in your room regarding color.

njmomma... well I went to home depo and homesense today...I took some photos of the manunfacture name and code and came home and 2 of the 4 I couldnt find.. So I give up! Thank you for all your help everyone.. hopefully I will find something I like along the way.. there is no point me buying a new rug I dont really like.. might as well keep the 5 x 7 that I have until I find something... Finding a carpet for me is the hardest.. and Now I dont want bla.. because I have seen color and I liked it... So anyways happy New Year all!

Seeing your lovely bedroom, it looks like you like a classically elegant look, and the furniture in the living room is more country casual. The pink-ish, chocolate milk color of the sofa fabric is also on the cool side and fights the warm ambience you're after. The rug you show above is great with the walls (on the screen, at least), not so much with the sofas. (Cover the sofas with your fingers and notice how much more cohesive the rug/walls/art look.)

Suggestions, anyone, short of new sofas? I'm stumped.

And I guess we ordered the sofa mainly because of comfort.. I thought it was a beige/tan.. but I can see how you see a bit of pink... I was trying to match the area rug with the art color.. The best part about ordering a rug from Home depo .. which is the one below.. is I can return it..Does it really look that aweful? I can take it lol...Maybe I will leave it a while... Just use one of the original rugs you chose and add some warm colored pillows. These ”pillows” I just scribbled in- to give general idea.

Does the furniture still look pink? And I know the clock shouldnt be there.. we just didnt take it down obviously .. I took this a couple of nights ago.. different lighting...

Your furniture does not look pink to me in any of your photos. It looks beige/tan on my screen.

Wayfair, either... so I was trying to go for home depo cause they are fabulous with returns... especially now everyone says it will look different in my home... I always like to be able to return...

Edgecomb grey is kind of a funny paint.. it can flip green and in the evening more of a cream color.. at least to me...(in the Christmas tree photo) And actually the carpet I have there is fine but its too small.. but it doesnt fight anything... at least in my opinion...

These are colors sampled from the Christmas tree photo (artificial light) and the original photo (natural light). You can see how different they are, and why I saw what I did in the original. Just confirms that colors can't be judged from a screen or even in a store; they have to be judged in the room, under different lighting conditions. (For both photos, walls/crown/ceiling colors were sampled directly above the left-most art piece. The rug sampled is the one where you asked to have the pillows added.)

Did your shopping trip help you determine what style of rug you like? Or what colors? I guess you didn't like either of the four enough to bring one home and try it? Greb some pillows to coordinate and give them a trial?

freedom.. I made my decision... and I ordered this rug.. I get it between Jan 9th and 13th.. so I think it will be ok.. its neutral enough.. if it doesnt work in my livingroom which Im sure it will .. I can move it to my familyroom... And I think once I get some throw pillows that will make the room.. thank you all for your help.. I will let you know when I get it.. (I did go out to both homesense and Lazyboy and didnt find anything.. so I went with this ...Have a Happy New year!
