The electrician's choice doesn't fit any definition of "high-end."

You can find some fixtures with regress from Halo or Juno, and your electrician should be able to get them immediately. If you don't like the stamped trim look or the LED lens look, then you'd have to go to a housing with Edison style 'bulb.'

If it's high-end in design, more than likely you'd have to step up to another brand to meet that.

I've always like these Maxxima anti-glare downlights which are available in several styles and colors at Home Depot.

I installed Juno 4" recessed can lights with white trim, haze reflectors, and PAR 20 bulbs. However, Juno makes Podz Downlights which look similar but are canless. The spec sheet shows all the options. I like the white trim and haze reflector so I'd consider one of these:

• Juno JPDZ4 SQDC ALO10 SWW5WD 90CRI 120 FRPC HZWH (square)
• Juno JPDZ4 DC ALO10 SWW5WD 90CRI 120 FRPC HZWH (round)

Both require the Juno JPDZRMJBX 120 FRPC M6 junction box for a remodel installation.

If you're not sure which reflector you'd prefer, you could order another reflector separately. For example, you could order the round Podz with the haze reflector and swap in the Juno J6RLTRIM DC WHZWH (wheat haze reflector) to see if you'd prefer it.

Lutron Diva or Maestro LED+ dimmers are the best.

Thanks. That Maxxima looked very intriguing -- especially for the price -- until I saw that it only dims to 20%. Low dimming is important to me. On that score the Juno (or some similar Halos that somebody else recommended) look more promising, but those don't appear to be as regressed or as nice otherwise.

I went to a lighting showroom today and saw some more expensive lights installed on display. Is there generally anyplace I could go to see these less expensive brands installed? Or as you suggested do I literally have to buy them, install them, and then decide whether to return them?

I purchased a few fixtures and tried them out.

For anyone considering a high-end project, this is where lighting design really pays off. Matching a few specs on paper like CRI, color temperature, or dimming doesn’t guarantee the same result across manufacturers. CRI, glare control, beam quality, color consistency, and dimming curves can vary widely, even when the numbers look identical. Without a lighting design, fixture selection often turns into educated guesswork, leading to testing, swapping, and rework which becomes costly in both time and money. A lighting design narrows options early based on how light actually behaves in the space, not just what’s listed on a spec sheet. When lighting is designed around daily routines and paired with true smart home automation features planned at the design stage, the experience improves even further. Lights respond naturally to occupancy and time of day, energy use drops, and the home feels more comfortable and finished reducing wall clutter from multiple switches, thermostats, security panels, etc while adding long-term enjoyment and value beyond the fixtures themselves.
