How would you improve my kitchen layout?

Plan shows existing kitchen. Only new work is new pantry, and opening to it from kitchen.

What changes to the island would you recommend? Goals for it are: 4 spots to sit, work space on both sides of sink, and more continuous counter work space in kitchen.

  • Pink lines show just extending it to the right to get seating and workspace. Doesn't solve sink issue.
  • Blue lines show new location if south leg of "U" is deleted (fridge and casework). Gives enough room to achieve all goals, but then need a new location for fridge.
  • Last option is to leave island pushed out far from wall oven, so it can stay wide and have enough clearance around it.

Prefer not to move existing walls.

If you put the fridge in the pantry, on the same wall as the stove, and delete the bottommost run of cabinetry, there might be a chance of getting some of your wishes. I would want 5' or nearly so behind the seating side of the blue island proposed, as the pathway remains a main traffic spot and people will be walking past people in seats, and make the island less deep to allow sufficient walking room.

A wall oven is wasteful of precious space in smaller kitchens so really my first thought was to change the cooktop to a range+oven, then move the sink to the wall where the wall oven etc is currently. You could do a small island as you have 10ft across the middle of the U - with a 48" aisle in front of the fridge, a 42" aisle at the stove side, that leaves room for a 30" wide, 5ish feet long island.

That second drawing you shared, with the island with 4 chairs added into the current U, is absolutely unworkable in real life. There simply isn't the necessary room between chairs, doors, in walkways. Luckily the dining table is right there, well within conversational distance of the kitchen, so let go of this particular island seating fantasy where you are trying to cram 10lbs of kitchen in a 5lb sack. Tight aisles are a nightmare forever and I really want to save you from that! So don't do that second drawing whatever you do.

You seem to like the idea of a sink in the island. Reconsider that. It belongs where your cooktop is beneath those windows, and it makes more sense to have your cooktop near the oven.

Can you post the existing layout with numbers and existing windows and doors?

Here's the existing layout. Sink is already in island. Only reason to leave it there is to save cost. Trying to solve getting longer runs of workspace; as well as finding a good way to access the new pantry (two ideas shown with yellow highlight).

Assume entire layout can be modified to improve function, get 4 seats at island, and provide access to pantry.

This could work and put your appliances in a more handy location.
