Weirdness in decor

I follow this woman and although I don’t always agree with her, this post made sense to me.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DTdvXlajt-r/?igsh=MTFxZTlsenR1d2l2ZA==

I like to have a few quirky, weird, and/or whimsical things around the house.

The other day I went to a show at a local craft gallery with a friend. They also have a small shop, and I commented to my friend that these were cute and I bet we could make them:

Her response was something like: my house is too boring, I would ’t be able to figure out what to do with it, but your house is interesting and artsy, I could see you finding a cute spot for it and having it make sense.

What do you think? Is your space more traditional, ”rule following”, etc., or do you like a little weirdness? Can you post some examples of quirkiness in your decor?

I have probably too much weirdness, will post a few more pics later but for now, here are my little bronze sculptures collected from trips to Santa Fe. I adore them but they are a bit kooky.

Sue, at first I thought you were writing about yourself and a friend said you needed more weird stuff in your house.

I don't exactly have a style I follow. I just have things I like and/or need. I don't consider those bronze animals "kooky" in the least. I guess my style is just random. I have a lot of cat stuff on my hutch shelves, accompanied by an Obama-playing-a-ukelele bottle opener.

    Good weirdness:

    Unusual books

    Interesting prints/paintings

Small (or large) unusual statues of critters/etc.

    Bad weirdness:

Body parts or animals preserved in jars for display (I have mixed feelings about ashes of relatives in urns on display)

    Ex husbands in the freezer

Not a lot. I'd post a photo of my little black snake if I knew where it's currently residing. It's my grand daughters version of elf on a shelf - when they come over they like to hide it. Here it is on my Christmas tree.

DH has a Punch bobble head and a carved lapis skull on his nightstand, next to a Waterford crystal lamp.

There's probably a few others but I'm so used to seeing them that they no longer seem weird.

oh I love this topic and seeing the *weird* treasures you all have. I think weird is in the eye of the beholder and have a few things that I think of as *interesting* but maybe not weird. Too dark for photos so will have to wait for tomorrow.

My current house is too formal to allow for much quirkiness, but there are some touches.

I don’t think that any of the examples posted are ”weird.” Interesting may be a more appropriate word.

An old dirty carburetor plopped on the dining room table is weird.

[I imagine someone will find a Dadaist piece — think Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain —that proves me wrong.]

@jojoco I don't think either of your photos has anything "quirky" in it!

Love the goat sculptures, Sue. I did the same here as you did - a bookcase turned cabinet of curiosities. I will take a photo and post in a bit. It holds the "weirdest" things in the house.

Decades ago, a new friend told me I had very interesting and unique decor. The house was not decorated how she pictured it would be.

I think many of the things I have been drawn to in antique stores (and online) the past 40+ years run in the unique category versus weird.

Okay, this might be weird, but it is a pair of lamps my parents purchased in the late 1950s for their bedroom. I had one rewired to use in a future laudnry room, but that never worked out. They are in the bunk room of our current home, and the first time they've been used since 1986. I had the shades custom made. The originals were long gone (and not something I would have used anyway). I think they are fun, but most importantly, they hold a lot of memories for me.

@bbstx I really like the last art piece (church/angels).

@Sueb20 Here is the current bookcase status. I am not sure how I can squeeze anything else on! It is still dark and turning the light on didn't work out very well.....

Yes, lots of horse things, as we had horses growing up. A few things my dad purchased when traveling. The oldest purchase of mine would be the taxidermy duckling (late 80s)

Chess pieces from Dad's set. The soldier on horseback is a fairly new purchase, as are the horse and elephant on top of the books.

All the pottery pieces hold the ashes of pets. They were all purchased on Etsy and I made the tags.

Can you spot the alligator teeth and buffalo tooth?!

Oddities around the house, Horse from a French butcher shop. Currently residing on the third floor. Bookcase is located in the landing between second and third floors.

Metal bird purchased online, above the HVAC door on the third floor.

I guess my motto would be "If I love it, I can make it work." At least in my mind! LOL

Bb, omg is that Amy Carlisle? I love her!! Wait, maybe I know of her because of you?? I have been wanting one of her paintings for years.

Allison, you win — I don’t have any teeth displayed! …yet. I love your collection.

Love seeing everyone’s fun things. Maybe I should have said fun instead of weird.

I have weird art, too. Will post some more pics when it’s light.

I had a deer jaw and feather that DH found while working outdoors. Sadly we had a couple instances of insecure dogs left home alone and both succombed after being there for years.

@Sueb20, yes, Amy Carlisle! I love her work. How funny if you heard of her from me. I may have talked about her when I was redecorating, which is when I bought that piece. But I don’t recall it specifically.

@deegw, I think a gallery wall of your child’s art work isn’t weird at all. And I love the penguin!

    I love everyone’s curiosities!

I used to have my great-grandfather’s headstone. White marble, about knee high, 80 lbs. My grandfather placed a new headstone on the grave at some time for some reason that I don’t know. When he died, Daddy took over guardianship of the headstone. When Daddy died, Sister had it for a while, then I had it for a while. When my nephew bought a house, he asked for it. Sister used it as a Halloween decoration. She and DBIL laughed themselves silly one Halloween when some teenaged boys, thinking it was styrofoam, kicked it. I’m sure he had a sore foot for a while …. and good enough for him!

Grabbed pics in a hurry as I run out to an estate sale where I always look for the oddities. As I said, these are more in the interesting category rather than weird.

These quirky frogs doing human things spoke to me in a shop in Santa Barbara in the 90s.

    Weird/quirky art, coming up.

    Hung above the TV.

She looks down on me from atop a cabinet in my office/craft room. This was a freebie from FB mkt.

Also in same room, a ”project” I started then lost interest.

These are next to my side of the bed.

On kitchen window sill, two tiny vintage gals. I made the flowers from toothpicks and vintage buttons.

On a stair landing we have another weird built-in shelf area where I display family photos and my kids’ masterpieces.

We have a few pieces by this artist. Her figures never have faces.

Finally, I have told this story before but we had to buy this painting in Charleston bc she looked just like me (at the time, when I was about 12 years younger).

I love seeing that so many of you are as ’weird’ and quirky as I am - in decorating anyway. Most of mine is art collected here and there, and some are small pieces scattered randomly. I tend to move art around now and then so it almost always seems to work. Some of these I may have posted here before.

This is one of the quirky things i have on display on a shelf in our great room. A fragment of the Challenger shuttle.

A cute honey jar that my mother always had on display above her stove. It just looks happy and resides in my kitchen behind glass doors.

Had this one a long time. Purchased not long after we built in our rural area.

This artist was fun to talk with. He makes these from old license plates. This one called my name.

This one is fun too. I put it in a guest bath. People read it and come out laughing about it, especially if they have deer.

My niece started painting again several years ago when she became a SAHM. She has fun with it and now is doing or has done several large wall murals for clients, mostly in schools, to brighten library walls, gyms, hallways. She always does some Holiday themes.

Enough for now. Have enjoyed everything you all have posted. Just wonderful to see the creativity.

Talk about quirky southern art… This is not mine, regrettably. It belongs to a former neighbor. The entire painting was done with mud!! I love it, but I’ve always wondered where the artist found blue mud?

    Sueb20 thanked bbstx

    last modified: 26 days ago

@bbstx, love your neighbor's mud painting! I have this one by Jimmie Sudduth.

From the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery: Jimmy Lee Sudduth painted with mud and natural dyes. Using a substance he called “sweet mud” (local soils mixed with sugar or Coca-Cola), Sudduth would block out the shapes of the painting. He would then rub plants and berries onto the surface of the mud to add color.

And, thank you for introducing me to Amy Carlisle. I'm with Sue, love her chapel paintings.

@ljwrar, Jimmy Lee Sudduth sounded familiar when I read it in your comment above. I googled his name and ”bicycle.” Comparing what I found online and the picture above, I believe the painting was done by Sudduth. My neighbor had a wonderful collection of art, so I’m not really surprised.

Dedtired, that is so cool. The tapes look just like mine. Not too long ago there were slots in lots of small restaurants and markets in my area. I bought this machine from the son of a man who used to service them. The seller won everytime on any of his machines. He said it was the way he pulled the lever. I did not have his touch. i have never won on my machine either, but my grandkids have. When we first considered buying one, I wondered if play8ng the slot mchine would corrupt them. That hasn’t happened.
